Driving down the freeway today in my 49 chevy 216 inline 6 and all of a sudden the third gear pops out and I heard a loud noise like a bang, then some smoke appeard from under the hood. The engine was still on but it wouldnt go into any gears. I turned off the engine pulled over, and noticed there was a trail of oil across the freeway and there was oil all over the lower part of the block. I hope its just the main seal, Im not an expert though. Any advise would be appreciated.
sounds like the internals of the gearbox went bye bye and just sprayed ****** fluid all over the engine
Sounds like something broke in the clutch maybe. But, Hell, i don't even know if it's a stick or automatic. If it's a stick, what's the clutch pedal feel like? Did it break a u-joint and the bang was the driveshaft landing on a X-member? We need more info. When you looked under the hood, and as you say the engine was still "on", was it still smoking? From where?
Did you look under it? Did you tow it home where you can check it out? From your description, it won't get fixed on the side of the road. Sorry no magic pills.
