Can anyone help me with my 1958-1962 Chevy inline six serial number decoding. The casting number says its a 1958-1962 235 but I can not find any other info based on the serial number stamped just left of the Dist.
Anyone know how it works or a good web page to help decode exact year/plant etc. etc.
    Number reads : F I 0 2 I J C

    Thanks

59-62 pickup truck 235 with manual trans and heavy duty clutch

if you look on the block kind of hidden by the starter you might find the casting date code, it will look like J 2 9 or something, the last digit is the last digit of the year.

since it was made in october the casting date will be for the year of manufacture, the model year will be the following year, as production started around the beginning of Sept, I think.

    Damn,
I figured you would be the first one to chime in.
Kinda hard getting parts from the local the parts store without a year. Those numbers doe not specify truck type right?
C10 1/2 ton, corvair series van, etc?
    This is a transplant in a 1952 GMC "101 22 P 35297" so I don't have the vin ***ociated with the engine to cl***ify.

    Thanks a ton squirrel

    Longbox,

Thats what was confusing me. I am familiar with the corvairs but for some reason all of the stovebolt number runners I was using kept pulling it up in the same field as 1961 corvairs/vans etc.

Anyhow here is the number behind the starter on the block: J177

So am I looking at a engine manufacture year of 1957 / model year 1958 right?

yeah, should be an October 17 1957 casting, used in a 58 truck, although my book shows that the JC code was used on the 4000 series truck (1-1/2 ton), not a pickup, in 1958.

    it's still a 235 though.

    L 27 1 probably means December 27th, 1961 casting date. B would be a 235 with a Powerglide transmission, in a 1962 p***enger car.

The engine was ***embled in Flint on Dec 29th.
