I have been using my own host and managing my own photo organizing software for the past few years. It is becoming a pain in the ass. I have 10,000+ pictures (about 8gigs?), car shows, etc. My host is slow (1and1.com) and I hate maintaining my own when I know there HAS to be something out there easier. I do not mind paying at all. Here are my requirements: Nice uploader applet/application that can handle uploads of 100+ pictures at a time. Batching them, maybe even resizing them. Good storage space and bandwidth (again, I don't mind paying) Ability to link to post pictures here. Simple looking with no ad's for other people who want to see my pictures...you know the whole slideshow thing, etc. Speed should be good and reliability good. I'd like to easily select photos for prints. If I could mix googles picasa with smugmugs web layout, I'd probably be golden. So far I have tried out the following: Flickr - the uploader is kind of weak. But bearable....The problem is organizing it to easy gallerys online sucks. I categorize things like "car shows 2006" and have all my individual shows underneath that, etc.. SmugMug - uploaders all plain suck ass. BUT the interface on the web is NICE. Picasa - Uploader and the picasa desktop software is GREAT for a guy like me..the "feeling lucky" photo fixer is awesome. ONLINE INTERFACE blows ass and it seems to be a BITCH to post pictures to message boards. I have yet to try photobucket...but it's "down for maintenance" now....not giving me a warm and fuzzy Any other options? I know this is WAY off topic, but I take pictures of pretty much every car at every car show I go to.
I have been using Fotki for my Custom Car Photo Archive. I have over 30.000 photos on there totaling over 15 GB It only costs $30 a year... and works perfect for me. perfect linking to the hamb and other sites You can order prints from it. www.fotki.com
thanks, I'll look into it...as of now...SmugMug is winning due to the fact that it has a few things I really like... ...I like that its very friendly to uploading original copies....this is great from a "having them in another place" factor. Sure I burn them to DVD but not nearly as frequent as I should. I also like the interface A LOT. the only thing that gets me is the uploader is subpar. I'll check out fotiki.
yeah - I am with 3wLarry, there needs to be a HAMB link to the rod pics of HAMBers! 23 gigs.... drool.
Hey caffine are you the guy that was doing the striping out of EB and had a older van? not sure but i think we met at one point...
Your host, 1and1.com, is know for being slow but cheap. For that much storage, you will probably pay a premium price if you want something faster. Have you tried Gallery or Coppermine photo galleries with your webhost? I have been happy with both, bt I have just a few megabytes of photos. Gallery seems to have a better interface for uploading, but coppermine is prettier. Slonaker
yeah I use gallery on 1and1. I hate to change hosts though and still continue with gallery...its GREAT, just I know there are better hosts out there that I do not have to maintain. It looks like im going to go with smugmug .I emailed them and they sent me a few more uploader interfaces not listed on the site that do EXACTLY what I want. and for 39 bucks a year I have unlimited storage and uploads and traffic. http://s98005534.onlinehome.us/gallery/ is my current "gallery" parties and events are where all the cars are.
I use PhotoBucket and they have been pretty good to me. It's $25 bucks a year, I've got unlimited photos and albums I can make, so far I've got 3153 photos on it. They tell me I get 62,000 hits per month and I use a monthly bandwidth of 7.8 GB. The site is very easy to use. I really like they layout of the albums and sub-albums. I think it's a good deal. Here's link to my Photobucket http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/MotorCityHotRodder/?
I've been using Fotki for almost 6 years now, $30/year for unlimited storage. I have 250,00+ images up there using more gigabytes of storage than you want to think about. Easy uploads, I use ftp, automatically resizes to include a mid-size image if your originals are large, lots of options, give it a try.
