I'm scheduled to go to California for Training in September. I have the option of choosing Orange County, San Francisco or San Diago.

I'm hoping to take a couple days vacation after the training and experience the california car culture.

So the question is which location should I go to and why?

  2. Orange County - take a look at all the events on my website and think of all the local attractions, NHRA Museum, The Petersen, etc, etc.

One of the best camping trips I ever took was first we went to the Salton Sea/Imperial Valley area and bought crates of oranges, dates and almonds right off the trees..then we went to Death Valley, went up into the Panamint Mts. and camped out during the day, pine trees, water, it was nice..at night we would go down into the Valley and roam around in the big dunes on moonlit nights..do it!

oc baby, you can pretty much do everything from there. LA, SD, IE
Plus there is also the beach!............
beware, if you have never been out of Iowa, it will be culture shock

I've been out a bit but I'm sure California is still going to be a culture shock.
A year in Nashville, then 4 years Army on the east coast. Came back to Iowa in 92 planning to get a degree and get out of here again, been here ever since. Took me a couple of years to mellow out and get back into the Iowa groove. Got married, now I'm sure I will be here for a long long time :)

OC is where its at. I have lived all over the place and this is by far my favorite place to live. Just like 54BelairGasser posted in OC you are close to everything. LA is 40 min away if there is no traffic. SD about a hour away. The desert and mountains 1 hour away. Vegas 4 hours away and the beach 5 to 10 min away. But you can get really board here if you don't know any one. I am sure if you head out to OC some one on here who lives in OC will show ya around.

    dude, enjoy the "mellow",
I was born and raised here in socal,
would leave tomorrow if I did not have parents to still take care of.

I hate this place.........not the place to raise kids........

    enjoy your stay

Fellow Iowan I have made a couple business trips to the land of Arnold and I would pick San Fran/Sacramento over SoCal but either choice will give you places to see.

Although SoCal has more places to see you can't get to them because the traffic sux so bad. I was able to use the jet lag to my advantage by getting up at 5am local time and driving when the traffic only sux a little.

I also think there are actually more old cars on the road up north than in SoCal.

If you do end up going to the OC I have a great map you can barrow.

i must agree with the comment that OC is where its at. beautiful girls and fine automobiles.......go look up Chip foose i hear he now does personally guided tours into his shop and feeds u duck feet covered in mongolian bbq sause at the end!

  14. First choice would be where you could go to one of the major car shows, as mentioned: Billetproof, Primer Nationals, El Mirage, etc. For touristy times, San Francisco first, San Diego second, and the F'N OC lasst! Actually you could hit both San Dog and the F'N OC both, if you had time.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

Billetproof is something you shouldnt miss if you are in the state during that time. That is in Norcal.

Earlier in the month is the Primer Nationals in Ventura (Socal.) That too is a great show.

OC does have beautiful women and great cars. However, I wouldnt agree that the cars are more or better in OC than up north. Weve got it pretty good in the bay area...

This trip is looking better and better all the time.

I'm tenatively scheduled to be in training Sept 3-16.

If I can get in a show while I'm there it will make the trip worth while!

  17. If you can pull it off, the Primer Nationals is September 1-2 and Billetproof is September 15th. Fly into LAX or Burbank, go to the Primer Nationals, drive the Pacific Coast Highway north to San Francisco, go to training, hit Billetproof and tour San Francisco.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

El Mirage always has a meet in Sept.
Cruisin' for a Cure at the O.C. fairgrounds.
... and look over socalcarculture's web site, always some mid-week cruises
