Sorry for the off topic. I have an old 50's Diner booth that has good vinyl on it, but its Orange and i hate the color of it. Does anyone know if there is a quality paint out that i can use?

  3. Really? I must have screwed something up. I did my arm rests for my car... color was perfect, but the dye cracked and flaked during the first few days of use.
Is there a prep tip I missed?

I have tried Krylon Fusion spray paint. The stuff is rad, and cheap enough to buy and sample.

This is a tricycle seat. It's not vinyl, but a dense rubber with a smooth surface. I painted it Fusion white, then Fusion metalic silver... it seems really tough.

I have never done a full seat, but have done a few arm rests, door pads, etc. with the SEM dye. I washed the surface with soap and water, then prepped with wax ana grease remover (prepsol), let dry completely, and sprayed on a few lighter coats, and it came out great. Good luck. -Joe

I changed my replacement '69 Camaro rear seat from black to white. I got the vinyl paint from a chevy dealer. Prepped the seat by washing it with soap and water, dried and then wiped it with laquer thinner just before painting. The thinner softened the vinyl just enough for the vinyl paint to stick. That was in 1974. It still looks like it was manufactored in white orginally.

Most vinyl 'preservatives' have silicone or some other chemical that paint doesn't like to adhere to... A good degreasing cleaner is a requirement before thinking about prepping it. Most anything that works well for regular paint will work well for Vinyl - some stuff is just harder on the vinyl and can actually "eat" it away if left to sit for a long time - wipe on and wipe off and you'll be fine.
