Looking for links, pics suggestions, on how to suicide doors on my 49 ford F-1..want to do it old school way to save money nomoney in the budget for the new mail order set-up
Search the tech articles, I think there is one there that shows how to do it by just switching the door jambs. Yeah, JUST switching the jambs! LOL. Looks like a lot of work to me. CHAZ
How old school are we talking, because I don't remember suicide doors on a car in the 50's 60's unless they came from the factory that way in the 20's or 30's. No-one turned them around on purpose. Pat.
The earliest I remember was mid 60's trucks. Take the front jambs on driver's side and move them to the passenger rear, and visa versa. Lot of work, but functional IF the front and rear of the doors are similar enough for the hinges to clear.
In the "Old school" days no one took perfectly functioning doors and hinged them backwards for style when open. They preferred to use the conventionally opening doors and keep them closed. The current faddish love affair with suicide doors has become so everyday blah that little Jap cars have them and everybody else too and people even advertise 4doors as having suicide doors when only the rear doors open backwards like the factory made them. SHEEEESH! Try something unique...doors with hinges at the front.
I just bought a set of new autoloc suicide door hinges really cheap off the HAMB classifieds, I think the guy has more. Certainly not as good as just swapping the hinges, but not bad either. CHAZ Here is the link to the tech article. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11640
OK for the do it yourselfer on a budget ya need to cut up a 53-56 f100. Get the hinge pockets and hinges, maybe even the jambs and switch them side to side and front to rear of course. Then you make them work. Remember to keep the hinges in a perfect verticle plane (I think thats what I want to say) straight up and down so they do not bind. I can't give you any more info really, but thats how I would do it!
Hate to admit it a long time ago t!! ( """THE LATE 80's """) HAD A 59 VOLKSWAGON THAT ME A MY COUSIN CHOPPED AND DID DOORS. WE USED CHEVY PICKUP HINGES AND SWITCH THE GUTS FROM DRIVERS DOOR TO PASS DOOR AND VICEAVERSA! ALSO MOVED JAMS TO OPPOSITE SIDE AND IN FRONT. WORKED REAL GOOD UNTIL DRUNK GIRLFRIEND HIT DOOR HANDLE WHILE GOING 70 MPH! TALK ABOUT A NICE BUCKLE IN PANEL AND A STAIN THAT I'M NOT GOING TO MENTION! WE WERE DIPSHITS BUT IT LOOKED GOOD AND COOOLL~~
I agree fordnutz nobody did that in the 50's, 60's or 70's that I know of. I thought it was more a late 80's or 90's thing. Big waste of time and money if you ask me.
