last week i blew my rear end apart on my 57 chevy while launching it.part of it was because it was old but has been regeared, part was because it was a open diff, and the biggest part was because it had violent axle wrap,i got a auburn limited slip for it and new bearing seal set.ring and pinion are in great shape.i am not a big fan of the under leaf spring traction bars to i am building my own link bars that will connect to the frame using a 3/4 heim and a bushing frame side, here is what i did to the axle tonight will have more this weekend

make sure you put some skinny bias ply tires on it so you don't get any bite, might help it live a bit longer? :)

I was told by Tom Reider (Reider Racing) that Dana 44 side gears will fit in the units. They have 28 splines. That, a billet main cap and Moser Axles will--while not cheap--make it live a lot longer.

Some of the best know things that cause a rear to grenade (other tan interna parts being weak)...axle wrp, wheel hop, and case separtion...

Axle wrap and wheel hop is taken care of by the correct setup, best know method fo case separation is a good diff covers, sometinmes called (I don't know whay" TA covers...actually a beefier diff cover that the bolts for the carrier bearing go though...somehow tied tied to this beefed up cover..supposed to kep the rear frm "speading" under load.

    Just thought I'd mention it.

good tips, but the rearend in question is a drop out third member type, aka front loader, so it does not use a rear cover

thanks for the tips, i have spoken dirrectly to aubrun gear and they put a promise on the limited slip will hold for 4 years, if it fails they will replace it for pennies on the dollar.as for the axles i will paint a line on them with strait edge and recheck them to see if it twists them, the tires are not wide at all 225s that all i could get under it with out narrowing the housing. the car has a four speed muncie with 350 hp.ill just hope for the best thats all the budget can do at this time
