I've got a vague (40-plus year old) recollection of a car featured in an American rod magazine in the 60's...

Somebody had chopped and channeled a DEUCE WOODIE!

Now I don't think they'd have actually cut up a gennie Deuce wagon, even back then, I think the body might have been scratchbuilt. From ancient memory it was fenderless, and had a pocket under the roof to stash the old malibus in.

Does anyone remember this car, or better still, have pics of it, or maybe even better, can identify the name and issue date of the original mag that featured the car? My son-in-law the cabinetmaker and I are looking for inspiration, and I live right near the beach....

    Cheers, Glen.

Is this it? Rodding & Restyling August 1957. Pages 34-35. It says it is a real woody.

    Rod,

Thank you, that's very much like it, but I don't think it's the actual car I remember. I only got into rod magazines as a teen in 1963, so I doubt if I'd have seen a 1957 mag even back then.

I'm sure the woodie I saw was built during that time in the mid 60's when 'rodding and surfing' sort of blended together courtesy of The Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. I can even recall a pic of the car with malibu's in the back, and I think it had a more pronounced 60's rake to it.

Still, that gives me a pretty good idea of what a chopped and channelled woodie will look like, now I've got two chores ahead of me...

Convince the missus to let me build one.
Coerce my cabinetmaker son-in-law into helping me.

    Thanks once again, Glen.

That was John Good's chopped and channeled 32 wagon which was also featured in HRM March 59.

Pardon my igs, but is that HRM 'hot rod magazine'? I checked and there's copies of it on ebay, but no mention of the woodie in the listed contents of the March 1959 issue.

    Cheers, Glen.

Thanks Richard, that's pretty much the style I've got in mind, (but based on an A cowl with a full sided hood)

I'd still love to see more though, especially the pics that first inspired me back in the 60's!

    Cheers, Glen.

hey Glen, yeah it is in that issue. It's actual a favorite issue that I keep handy because Ramussens Bahama Blue AV8 was on the cover and in that issue. Good's "Hot Box" had a 2 page spread, ppgs 48-49.

Thank you, picked up a nice clean copy on ebay for $4.50. With postage to Oz and currency conversion it's under $A12, so great buying as far as I'm concerned.

Still reckon there's a mid 60's one out there somewhere.....

    Cheers, Glen.

There may have been more than one that looked just like this one. Hank's Speed shop in Berwyn Pa. had one very similar to it in the early 60s. There were some pictures of one competing at the drags in some early magazine. Hank's made a big impression on me in my formative years.:D I can't remember what powered it. Probably several engines over time. I always wondered what ever happened to it.

'Hanks Speed Shop' rings a very vague bell, but after more than 40 years anything's possible inside my head!

The car I remember I think was powered by a 'Corvette' V8, (but weren't they ALL back then?) It had outside headers, no hood, bobbed rear fenders, was chopped and channelled, and I think it had a special 'pocket' built in under the roof to hold a couple of malibus. I don't remember colour, so maybe it was just an inner pages b/w shoot with no cover pic.

I know it made an impression on me when I saw it too!

    Cheers, Glen.

    Leon,

Car definitely had that great 60's rake to it, but can't remember seeing a colour pic, the article was black and white from memory, also typical of 60's magazines. I honestly can't remember if it had a pic on the cover or not, but I keep scanning through the old mags on ebay looking for one!

Now I reckon if every rod built in that era had a gennie 'Corvette' mill in it, there'd be no 50's and 60's Vettes left!
