347 Pontiac Fan Belt Numbers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by blackjack, May 2, 2007.

  1. I have a 1957 347 Pontiac motor in my Modifed. It came from a 57 GMC pickup truck.

I urgently need a fan belt for it but I am have real trouble locating anything here in the UK. It is a very long vee belt that takes in the bottom pulley, the water pump and the dynamo (generator).

A US parts spe******t over here said he might be able to do something if I could give him the codes off the dynamo - but all that's on there is the legend 12V!

Can anyone help me out with Gates or other standard numbers. If anyone has one or can get one and would be willing to post it to me in the UK then I could pay in advance by PayPal.

    Thanks lads.

You can always get a piece of rope and run it around all the pulleys. Then mark how long it needs to be. Then give that length to you parts guy. Then figure out how wide the belt needs to be to fit in the pulleys. Most belts are marked with there length and width. EX. 17530. 17= 17/32 width. 530= 53.0 inches in length.

I'm pretty sure those numbers will decode into belt type and length--who knows how??

7508 might be 7/16" wide by 50.8" long, 7560 might be 7/16" wide by 56.0" long

at least that's how I decode Gates numbers, which are 4 digits and start with 7 for normal sized (narrow) belts.
