Sorta O/T - "Gumball 3000" fatal accident

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Zenor, May 3, 2007.

  1. Here's a great idea! Give exotic cars to a bunch of preening celebrity dimwits and trustfund ***holes, then send them out to race on public roads.

What's the worst thing that could happen?

Congrats to all the corporate sponsors of this clusterf***, and the drivers for winning an all-expense-paid vacation to Macedonian prison.

  2. Hmmm, I bet they don't have cable TV in their slammers?

  3. Let's hope there's plenty of alternative prison "entertainment" awaiting these ****ers.

  4. I bet they didn't realize the word fist can be used as a verb..............I'll quit now.

Haha ... I JUST looked that up, because I didn't know either.

Apparently, it's an Internet term derived from "owned" that means destruction.

    At least I learned something.

Where's Macedonia? Is it the same place where those expensive nuts come from?

Always hated that race. Thousands of dollars to enter, hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy a damn car for it, and no idea what the **** is going on. I doubt these guys even know how to change oil, but they get to act like car experts in front of camera. And the nerve to leave a murder scene because they think they're en***led to beat the rap. ***holes.

I understand that Macedonia is a bit behind the more liberal European states like Turkey in prison reform...

It's an interesting concept... I can't lie - I like the idea of an illegal, no rules race on open roads... It's punk rock and all...

That said, racing with people that don't know how to drive doesn't appeal to me in the least. I've spent some time on the track with folks that shouldn't be there and it's not enjoyable in the least... I can't imagine doing it with the extra obstacles of a public road.

These folks will most likely go to jail... And it won't be a pleasant experience at all.

    Sad.

See "Midnight Run" (think that's it) for your introduction to Turkish prison.

For the amount of money that's put into this rally now (unlike earlier years), it would have been a wise move on the higher up's behalf to send some folks to Skip Barber or Bondurant, if only for a weekend.

  20. Midnight Express. That is a seriously ****ed-up movie, my dad took me to see it when I was eight to try to scare me into good behavior. Too bad I wasn't twelve, may have done more good.:(

If those jerks are rich enough they might be able to buy themselves out of this "situation". Let´s hope the transaction from the Bahamas to Macedonia will take a couple of days so that the big hairy guys can take care of those "***holes".

    Concept is cool, but....

Seems to me events like that attract guys who after half a lifetime of succesfully building their empires, want to prove to the world that they also could have been a Professional Racecar driver if they wanted.
And they'll buy lots of Horsepower to make up for Driving Abillity and Old Man's Reflexes....

And when one of them gets it wrong in a big way, they give the Naders of this world Ammo to convince everybody that Fast Motoring is dangerous...

I feel bad for the people that got hurt.

I have a friend who is from Macedonia - it's just north of Greece.

criminal justice system is eye-for eye; he was over there as a teenager one summer and while in a neighboring village - broke a kid's leg inna accident. his family got him back home right away to avoid the angry mob...

Then next day, the folks from the other village showed up at the family's doorstep asking for 'payment'. They took his cousin, broke his arm - and all was even between villages again.

Based on that - I'd say once they're in jail - they're goners.

  24. Ryan, I LOVED the original Cannonball Run (the real rally, not the **** Burt Reynolds movie). That was punk rock. And the participants - like Yates, Gurney, et al. - were car guys who knew what they were doing behind a steering wheel.

By contrast the modern incarnations of the concept, like the Gumball and Bullrun, are made-for-basic-cable Spike TV ********, sponsored by Adidas and AXE perfume. Idle eurotrash *******s, has-been actors, and wanna-be dotcom millionaire ****s playing make-believe racecar hero, none of whom have turned a wrench in their lives. The "Gumball" is the automotive equivalent of Paris Hilton, and the "Bullrun" Kevin Federline.

The only surprise about this accident is that it didn't happen sooner.

I know a couple of guys who did the 'race' in a Porsche last year and their stories of long distance high speed driving, loud parties and lack of sleep were a little worrying to say the least.
Don't get me wrong, I like driving fast and I sometimes drive like an idiot when there's plenty of room and nobody about, but fast cars and a reduced reaction time due to lack of sleep seem like a bad combination to me.:(

  28. I was in those all those Balkan countries in the 1990s. Greece, Turkey and Croatia are pretty nice. The rest are ****holes. The briefings I got from the military said that if you were jailed, someone on the outside would be responsible for your food and medical care.

  29. I served with the UN in Macedonia and some other Eastern European countries. You get put in the clink and your one ****ed duck. Lucky they are rich, if some one turns up there quick enough with enough $$ maybe you can buy yourself out. 5 will get you 10 they will suffer though!
