Just got back from the Hawaiian Islands in Feb. We went with three other couples from our Classic Chevy Club. Spent the last four days exploring Maui, driving the off limits areas. We were there long enough to find out the Mustang convertible is the state car, by my count close to 10 percent.

I would 've thought by all that I saw there that the percentage was much higher than 10%

I live on Oahu and grew up on Kauai and cars have always been a big deal in Hawaii. There are ALOT of old cars out here. Most are Street Rodded or Resto's and most don't get too much road time. As you can imagine the salt air wreaks havoc on anything metal! But I do see a few nice runners on almost a daily basis. The traditional styling is not real popular, but recently saw a 50's survivor A Roadster at a car show here that was beautifully restored. The racing and Hot Rod scene was really big here in the fifties and sixties complete with drive inns and great hanging out spots. I've even seen old Hot Rod magazine coverage on cars built here in the late fifties. You can find more info about local cruises and other events at the following websites:

Hey Lucky444 do ya'll do anything special to the old tin to help with the rust problem? I live on the Gulf of Mexico and seems like the stuff rust away before your eyes. We use a lot of Ospho here how about you?

Sorry, I don't know of anyone using a special concoction to ward off that rust. Just alot of washing and waxing. You'd be surprised how far that salt will travel with the tradewinds. Even things in the home are not safe! Hey Evel, it is truly surprising to see that old coupe sitting out in the open like that. It does help that it's in "Up Country" Maui. Not so much salt, but probably rained on alot. I will definitely look for it next time over there.

  15. I'm jealous too, overdue to make another trip over there. Maui No Ka Oi. Did you get to go to the drags? Really neat having the sun set behind you, the moon coming up in front of you and the dragsters heading for Mt Haleakela!

Best way to go around the west end of the island is on a Harley (rent it from Maui HD and get a HOG discount and be sure to check out the wooden Harley "brother" to the one that was at the GNRS). Most of the trip is in 1st and 2nd gear!

Do any of you notice something missing from the pics? The infamous Fat Elvis glasses that Piero sports for fashion reasons. Would have looked appropiate being that he had one of his best concerts live on t.v. from the islands. The best were the Vegas ones by far. KNUX!

Nice pics! There are rodders and bikers on all the islands. But washing and waxing is no choice. Gotta keep the salt off. Mahalo!

  18. I didn't realize so many people from the HAMB visit Hawaii. I am about 15 miles from Hilo if anyone comes to the big island look me up . Be glad to play tour guide or you could come out to the shop and play cars.

Last week I found the nude beach on the big island! We traveled to the top of the crater, hit the lava tube and then began looking for a black beach. We took route 11 on the southern tip to where the lava flow closed the road.
Turned left there and took a residential road north long the coastline.
We stopped at the cove and our mouth fell open. We both said that cove was the most beautiful place on the planet! Took a steep trek down the rocks to the black sand and about died after realizing there were 60-70 totally nude sunbathers down there!

I'm guessing those 60-70 nude bathers was NOT a good thing? From experience I know how that can ruin a beach experience. Not all of those bathers are hot.
