first off ...brace yourselves i type like i talk...so sorry if im not english internet savy...well those that know me know i had a little trouble at the round up with poppin' my motor.wish i could say it was racing milner on dead mans curve at 130 mph.but it wasnt..it was trying to make it to the damn car show.
anyway i brought her home last saturday from ftw.
first i pulled the intake and heads off and the dizzy...all A ok....i was worried about the heads and the dizzy being the good 57 big valve heads and later good style dizzy.
well today i finally got of my but and started tearing down the rest.it seems that when the piece of cam broke(two lobes) it fell down and got caught in the #5 rod and tore the rod in half which swung out and busted the block.all thepistons look good, even #5 hell even the rings look good.not sure if the crank is ok yet.not quite sure whats going on with the rear crank case nuts some sort of star socket i dont have.so im picking up my spare blocks, and maybe i can put something back together.ill try to get some pictures.

Sounds like you can get this fixed pretty quickly. I remember reading a build-up article on Y-blocks in some mag. Hopefully someone might be able to find it. Some guys like Mr.Gasser have Photographic Magazine mentality.

Anyways, it should be a good read to help you avoid the pit falls. I hope you only go through this once...I hope I never experience it. [IMG]

Here's a dumb question, does the weird nuts look like a Torx socket?

jake i know what you were saying...but i really dont think so.you should see how the rod is.it looks like it was fine except for the huge piece of metal smacking into and blocking it.the cylinder wall and even the rings look good on the #5 busted cylinder.i think it was the cam making all the pushrod noise...and that would explain why the valves could never get quite right no matter how many times you adjusted them.

Jesse, when did they come out with Torx? I was wondering the same thing, but that motor is a 57. It was rebuilt at one point, but that was a while ago as well...

I don't rightly know, I know that Vrod heads are held on by a weird bolt head I've never seen. It looks like a Torx tip, I guess you could call it an inverted Torx. I doubt thats what they are but you can never tell.

stupid question, but sure they ain't just 12 point nuts?

  14. Dusty, if the star thingy nuts look like inverted torx, then it's got to be an 8 point. They sell a set of those sockets at O'reilly, I'm sure anywhere else as well.

I NEVER SAW THE CAR UNTIL THE SHOW! Just for the record! Besides, Rodney's made it just fine!

If it's 8 point they sell them at Sears, too.

Do you have any idea what made that cam break? That's a mystery. Was it just old? Was it some fly by night aftermarket company?

Here is the best pic we got...There is a slightly smaller hole on the opposite side and if you positioned yourself just right, you could see right through the block.

You caught me and exposed my evil plan to rid the world of "obsolete" and unique engines in favor uniform performance and style, and cheap parts, that make up the world of the ol' reliable "bellybutton" motor.

And I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling hot rodders! [IMG]

Just kidding, in a way I might have hexed that Y block. On the Friday night before the show, our hero, kartbreaker, assured me that I would hear it screaming from the open pipes the next day at the show.

    Maybe I am a Jinx.

Is this the wrench your looking for? it says Ford on the other side, it might be a brake wrench, but I have yet to come across a square ford brake bolt. If you need a 8 point socket sears does sell them but you have to look, at least at my sears. They usually end up on the same peg as the 12 points.

Why don't you just put a Hudson motor in it and beat the Hudson Kid with a taste of his own medicine?

    Hey... I am concerned...
concerned that that is the closest that you've gotten to a warm hole in a long time! [IMG]

I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast.

No, actually I am anxious to see yer ride run at the drags... and remember, it's not called the "drags" because you tie your ride to the bumper of a truck and have it "drag" you across the finish line.
It's also not called the "drags" because Culture Club plays on the main stage....
