I got this 53 merc flathead v8 from another hamber "PDX LEFTY" ill update with the story and pics later! "great guy" but he said that the crank might be frozen. i took all the bolts off the oil pan but it seems like theres some kinda trick as to getting it off. any pointers?
I think the late Mercs had a partial windage tray with a cover over the pump - never disassembled one, but can't imagine it would prevent removal of the pan itself...
It would seem like the oil pump pickup is stuck to the pan. The one I helped rebuild had so much sludge in the sump that the pickup was surounded by the crap and really had to struggle to get it loose. Aslong as you don't mangle the rail try prying up in the rear both sides together.
I GOT IT! thanks for the help guys, so anyways the good and the bad,,,,,,,,,,,,, The block and interernals are in great shape nice and clean but the cam is snapped in half! whats up with that. so i guess its gonna get hot tanked and rebuilt nice and fancy. but the half ass side of me wonders, could I just replace the cam? haha
