If i got a truck for free. No papers on the truck. pretty much just the shell. It is completely stripped and I can not find a VIN on the trucj anywhere. Talked to DMV and every paperwork they told me to fill out requires you put a VIN number. Any ideas on what to do. I am sure some of you guys have run across this problem.

Had the same problem with my model A in Tennessee.

No sweat here. Just asked the DMV to ***ign me a new VIN. It took them 8 months to get it done, but done it is.
I think it's more complicated in California, but start by doing just what you've done, ask advice.

    Good luck!

First off I'd say you don't need a ***le yet. This is just one suggestion. Decide on the power train. If you use a stock block back in it, use the number off the block.

That was done back then anyways.

No can do. The truck is actually my 56 Ford. I put a 302 in it already that was out of a 89 mustang. Minus the windshield and it not being registered the truck is drivable. Really need to get it registered so that i can insure it. Thanks for the help.

Most states will create a new vin number. Maybe you need to ask elsewhere. Perhaps it does take awhile for that and I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Try and find the person you need to talk to, to get a new vin number. I figure California is a PITA but there has to be a way to do it.

This is late in the game to be asking. But you really have 2 routes, buy a ***le and tag, or apply for a state issued vin.

Around here, that requires one DMV visit to get the form, a police visit to sign the DMV form with the comment "no vin". second visit to DMV, turn in form and a vehicle photo, wait for new vin# to arrive in the mail. Make a vin tag per their specs, with their number, apply to vehicle per their specs, have a 2nd officer out to sign papers stating the new vin is applied to the vehicle. Third visit to DMV is the last one.

Your nightmare is the cops or DMV finding a VIN, and having no paperwork. Now it's probably a 60 day wait while attempts are made to contact the last registered owner, and if it's out of state, a court order for that state to issue a ***le to you. This is ***uming the original owner doesn't want it back.

At the moment, going thru the same thing with a car trailer. Waiting for my new state VIN to arrive, and have a large pile of parts in the garage waiting to be installed. I ain't bolting one dime of parts to that thing until there's proper ownership paperwork in my hand, because at any point til then, the police could show up, announce it stolen and take it (along with everything I installed). Not envious of your situation at all.

go to the tripple a office in your area-- they should know the specifics for your area, and should have or know where to get the paper work, and in what order...

You could buy a ***le and stamp the number in the frame , paint it all and call a peace officer to come verify the VIN. Do you know anyone that is a cop, sherrifs office, highway patrol? Any of them can do it. Get 2 or 3 forms from DMV as they won't allow ANY mistakes on the form...no cross outs double writovers etc. Fill it out and flag down a cop driving by to see if he has time to do the verification...he may want to fill it out himself, but sometimes they get lazy. When you are done just go to DMV and apply for a new ***le/registration .

since your in nor cal, grab a copy of the cruising news. There is an add in it for a lady that does registrations. I don't have a copy handy so I'm not sure of her number or business name, but I had her handle a car of mine with no paperwork. She came to my house, did the vin verification, had some paperwork for me to fill out, then she went to dmv for me and dropped my new plates and registration at my house later that day. She knows her stuff and can probably help you figure out what to do.

If you have the stock frame still in tact, you will find vin # stamped on the top p***enger side frame by the original trans cross member or ya might say just in front of the cab.

Thanks for all the advice and help. Thank God I have quite of few friends who are deputies and city police officers so that will not be a problem. Now that I think of it brewsir I am the one that bought the 56 ford frame with the valare front clip off of newman who bought it off you. Does newman by chance have the old paperwork because if he does that will save me all the BS.

HOPEFULLY YOU CAN FIND A VIN NUMBER BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T, THE DMV WILL SEND YOU TO THE CHP TO ***IGN YOU A NEW VIN ON A BLUE VIN PLATE THAT IS CONSIDERED SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION. IF YOU HAVE A SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION VEHICLE, YOU HAVE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO THE SMOG SPECIFICATIONS TO THE YEAR OF THE MOTOR YOU HAVE IN THE CAR. SO MY ADVICE IS TO TRY AND FIND THE VIN ON THE FRAME OR FIND A MOTOR THAT IS PRE SMOG, THE NUMBER FROM THE AD IN THE CRUISING NEWS IS 530-269-1752 OR KLEEK@FOOTHILL.NET, TRY TO GET A HOLD OF SOMEONE LIKE THAT IF YOU CAN'T GET YOUR PAPERWORK BECAUSE SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION IS NOT THE WAY TO GO.

Wasn't the VIN on these trucks on a tag riveted to...the glovebox lid?? What genius thought that up?

The vin # is in two places on the 53-56 ford f-100's driver side door jamb 4 rivets, and on top p***enger frame just outside cab. So skilling this truck has volare clip, it is likely that these #'s were lost when the installer did the boxing plates on the frame
