Hi ; i'm looking for pics of 46-48 ford or merc convertibles with chopped and folding roofs. thanks kb
Google Steves auto restoration in Portland and look at the converts he is doing. The blue one was in the GNRS in Pomona. Big $$$, but super top.
I sunk the rear mounting brackets, 2.5" and moved them forward 7/8" so the bow would still clear the back of the body after being chopped. Had to modify these brackets quite a bit, and to fit the power motors. I had to add 1" to the front of the bows to get the header to mate up again.
This was the tough part. I did not like how chopped convertible wing windows end up with a long flat top on them. I took the vent window ***embly apart and essentially move it down and forward and had it tig welded back together. The top length is the same. This necessitated longer side windows (by 1-7/8") The original window frames are stainless wrapped over steel. I made new frames from solid stainless channel off 58-59 Merc and Edsel 4 door hardtop and wagon stainless.
To make the rear quarter window stainless required a simple die to use in a arbor press. It bends easier than you think.
Thanks, No more cars like this in my future though, had to try it, now its time to get back to basics......
well,,since you brought THAT up...i didnt want to be rude about the wheel choice,,, AWESOME WORK,,and good luck in all your future RAT ROD enterprises!

Janne, Anyone of those renderings would be tops! Each one is perfect, would be hard to decide which one too. Good luck on that custom and take car. Ken
