How to build a conni kit? I am going to build a continental kit on my 57 Olds and I am looking for drawings or pictures of someone building one. Mostly I am looking for how to make the fastening for the spare wheel, so I can tilt it forward, when I am opening the trunk. But this function have to sit very low ,since I dont want to have a big opening around the spare wheel. Hopefully you understand my bad English and know what I am trying to tell you guys. I will appreciate any info about this.
The following pictures are of the continental kit that was on one of my parts cars. It was rather crudely made from steel channel and really looked more like an adaptation of a camper/trailer spare wheel holder. The hinged base of the wheel holder is attached to the frame of the car very similarly to a trailer hitch. The hinge allowed the wheel to be tilted away from the trunk lid and fuel filler cap. There wasn't alot of travel, but it looked like enough for access to the filler as long as the tire was a skinny bias ply. In fact, I don't think a radial would even fit in the tire well. I'm not sure if these pictures will help, but they may give you some ideas. Sorry, the pics are so hu****ous!
I don't really care for continental kits, either. In fact, the one in the pictures was given away with the whole car to a friend of mine. But, the use of continental kits as an accessory is every bit as traditional as multiple carbs and wide white wall bias plys. It just may not be to everyone's taste.
i have one on the buick that was homemade. it tilts a little back so you can get in the trunk with ease. i can take it apart and take some more pictures if you would like more info
Hi And thanks for the inputs. Buick 58 You have a nice car. I would have loved seen some more pictures of it. Maybe you can email me some at torghatten@c2i.net. That would have been great. I have never seen cruiser skirts on a 4 door before. When it comes to conni kit or not, my personal meaning it’s that it looks good on some cars.
