So me and 28oakland cruised up to Dewey for the straykat 500 right.... not a problem, other than my olds having the hiccups and cuttin out a little once it got warm. Then 28's brakes go out and loose all the juice, so we spent an hour or so trying to fix them while at the show and people are asking what grille he has and we're under the car! Duh... "not now, we're busy!!" So we take off heading home and 28 takes the 75 exit and take the 51 exit and head through town... well just about 21st St. my battery takes a nose dive off the tray and into the fan, guess it was trying to committ suicide. Didn't work but made one heck of a noise, I thought I dropped the drive shaft till I gave it gas and it moved.... Check out the pics.... I slide it back on the battery tray and started it back up, and headed to goztrider's house for a little meet and greet. Thanks to goztrider's help we were able to pull the battery, get a discount on a new one, and he gave me a good bungy off his burnt torch tank (previous thread from last week) and core battery as they wouldn't take a battery with a bay window in it!!! So my tech is to take a bungy and strap your battery down if there is no hold down. If the bungy is too long simply tye a knot in it to shank it down.
Good to hear it did not push it into the radiator and cause a leak. Sound like the day was a work in progress. How was the show?
Hey Chad, that car looks really good in front of my house..... Glad to help. Just wish they'da dropped the price on that battery a bit more. I'll smack Oscar around next time I go in there. I still think its funny as hell that battery was still working with 2 cells gone and dead! Anyway, was good to meet you guys, and you're welcome to drop by anytime. Just give me a holler and we'll get together!
Bungees should NEVER be used for hold downs. It's backyard engineering (in other words, I was too cheap to go find a hold down kit at the auto parts store.) I would only use them on beater S-10 pick-ups when you destroy the factory hold down bolt.
Nothing wrong with using a bungee in an emergency like that. I wouldn't use one as a permanent fix. I've seen alot of that have been done that way, though. Especially older LTDs and Mustangs. I'm surprized that they wouldn't take the ventilated battery as a core. The battery manufacturers don't care if it's got a hole in it or not. They'll take them any way they get them.
It won't be permanent, but that hole is!!! haha I'll be making a bat box for it with a top hold down, very soon too I might add!! The show was cool, probably 300 or so cars.... lot's of good looking customs and hot rods! and a few of the "85 camaro" type cars, way outta place!!
Hey, glad you made it back okay. btw I love bungies, a couple of those and a role of Duct tape and you can fix just about anything, on the road. My brake line broke again on the way back again. I guess it is time for a little re-engineering?
The battery in my 62 Buick was tied down with some rope that looked like it came off of someone's clothesline. A bungee cord sounds so much more practical...easier to remove and reinstall when you have to take out the battery.
Damn... sounds like someone is complaining about a free bungy cord. Hey, what more can you want from free! Glad you made it back okay though. Bungies are a step up from the original Model A and T mechanics baling wire.
Not the one you gave me... the one I have on my lawn mower trailer.... Hey I found Bailing wire on my shocks on the olds thursday when I put the 2" blocks on it!!
I've seen some major repairs made - at least in temporary fashion - using baling wire. It is some amazing stuff, especially when it is used for multiple strands.
I had one slide over enough so the generator fan ate the corner off the battery and slung acid all over the engine compartment, I used epoxy to patch the battery and ran it 'till I got rid of the car.
it was wierd, I actually didn't notice any acid, guess I'll find out in a couple of days. I had it on my hand and it never burnt me. Maybe it'll clean the grease off my engine? hmmm....
Hey hey hey hey ...DO NOT leave out the other of the wonder tools to carry other bungee's and duct tape, which is cable ties of all sizes. I have actually used a big *** 3 foot long to hold a battery in, just as a tempory fix and have also used one to holdmy back rest on my bike while on a 3500 miles trip because the Harley shop in North Carolina didn't have one in stock. Kewl thread ***le because thats what lured me in.
Chad, Sam didn't teach you that did he? Man I quit rigging battery hold downs years ago when I moved to the sticks and the roads were rough as hell. A battery wouldn't last no time if it wasn't held down right.
I'd hose it down good with plenty of water - better yet, a baking soda/water solution to neutralize any acid. What you don't see will eat something important away!
I have done the battery in the altenator pulley thing and made a smaller hole than what you have. I got battery acid everywhere. The fan helps spread it all around. I washed it off and it still made a mess. I should have neutralized it with baking soda first. Neal
I'm pretty sure they do have acid in them - I'm wearing a pair of 'holy' jeans that I dripped some on and then washed them!
