OT: Question for the Texas bunch in here

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by xxwelderxx, May 7, 2007.

  1. Anyone know what Denison, TX is like? My wife and I saw some houses there that we like, but the pictures of the area looks sketchy.

    Anyone?

Daddyo54 lives there. He can give you a better scoop... but like many parts of the country, there are some decent parts and some sketchy parts of the town/area. It's an older town that hasn't got ran over with loads of strip malls and Super Walmarts and fast food chains and planned communities...

KKOA has a pretty big show there last weekend of October every year, and Jamie (Daddyo54) and his club, Kustom Kings have a smaller, but very fun show at a drive-in burger joint there in the Fall.

Smallish, older town. There are some areas with really neat older homes and some sketchy areas as well. If you like the city life, or at least like to be near it, it's a bit of a haul down to Dallas, proably an hour and 15 minutes or more.

Not my cup of tea because I like being closer to the city, but everyone's tastes are different.

They're from Northern NJ. I don't think they're gonna find Denison that cold!!!

Even though it does seem cold to me, too.

  7. Yea Im sure what you guys have for cold down there is warm for me.

I think i really just need to take a trip down to TX to get a feel for the area and see where I want to live.

Thanks for the help. If you have any recommendations as to where to look please feel free to p*** some info along.

My wife and I are heavily tattooed. I know small towns in western Nj and PA arent too fond of the look. So ....just keep that in mind.

after spending all weekend in East Texas and west Louisiana, I can tell you that the Tattoos don't jive in Small town texas. (my wife and I are also heavily tattooed.)

I think you're gonna be better off here (Austin) Houston, or Dallas. or San Antonio. ( I have alot of buddies in San Antone.)

a "research vacation" is probably in your best interest.

Gotta agree about the tattoo thing. We live in Plano, which is just north of Dallas. Folks are pretty friendly about it here for the most part. We lived 10 miles further north in Allen when we first moved here and people looked at us like we had three heads. We stuck with the older part of south Plano because the schools are good (we have two kids), but it's still only 15 minutes from downtown Dallas.

If you want to be near Dallas, look in Plano, Richardson, Garland, Mesquite, Dallas (Lakewood, Lake Highlands and a few other neighborhoods specifically), even a little further out like Murphy, Parker, Wylie.

Email me at rocketdeville@yahoo.com if you decide to come to Dallas to look. We can definitely point you in the right direction(s) and more importantly, tell you which places to avoid.

North part of Dallas isn't the only place you should look. I live south of I20 in Ellis county and land and houses are about 25% cheaper down here. Plus the folks don't care if you have tats or not.

It’s not a bad drive, because it’s a straight shot down the highway. It is a smaller town (compared to the DFW area), but they do still have a lot of the comforts you would expect... Plus its only 30 minutes away from McKinney (Dallas suburb) that’s probably one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. There is a bunch of stuff in Sherman which is basically connected to it. Housing is still very affordable compared to Dallas. In my opinion they have one of the coolest un-refurbished downtown districts anywhere around here... The metroplex is growing out that way and it’s only a matter of time before grows that way... I’m working on getting a job as a firefighter up there, and its somewhere Id love to live and work. That’s just my take on it...

But its all kind of relative isn’t it?

  13. Do you know what houses cost in my area? A 2 bedroom single level house on .21 acres is $499,000.

So anything in TX seems right now seems affordable.

You could get a 4 bedroom in a s**** neighborhood for that much. Hell, if you went somewhere like Parker or Fairview, you could get a 4 bedroom on an acre for that much.

If that's your benchmark, just about anywhere down here will seem like a bargain. I briefly moved to the Baltimore area last year and my house was barely 1,000 SF and it was $300K and in a so-so area. You definitely get a lot for your money in Tejas.

  18. My wifes family lives in Anna already. So they tell me all the secrets!

Plus I hate NJ with a p***ion. I wouldnt mind paying cheap car insurance and living on some bit of land without the person nextdoor keeping an eye on what Im doing all the time.

There are a lot of hot rodders in the DFW area...they're just all spread out so you don't see them very often. There are several good rod shops around, and at least two good shows (Goodguys and Pistons & Paint), as well as some smaller local cruise nights.

Denison is a pretty neat little town...I've been there a few times and I like it. I don't think there's a hoppin' night life or anything like that, but Dallas isn't that far away if you need that sort of thing.
