I just picked up a 1962 Cadillac 390 engine and transmission. The guy I bought it from says it ran super strong, but the transmission leaked so the car was parked. Does the 62' have a hydramatic trans, or can a newer style bolt to this pattern? Thanks for all the help in advance!

  2. It's a 4 speed hydromatic...called a Jetaway. Nothing else fits without an adapter :(
Sensitive to fluid level, heat, and linkage adjustment. Great trans, though, when it's working right.

I have one that you can have in OKC. PM me if interested; it's going to the crusher soon unless someone wants it, been sitting a while. Also have the 390 short block attached, locked up if you want for spare parts.

If it's just a leak, it may be a simple seal or gasket problem. All the parts are available here. http://www.autotran.us/jhmkits1.html I rebuilt one about 8 years, and once it was done the thing shifted real nice. It's a good trans for the stock car, but if you are using it for something else you probably need a different trans.

Yeah, it will be in a 31' Chevrolet coupe with a 6x2 intake. Very light car obviously. Should it work okay in this set-up? The guy said it shifted fine, and ran right on down the highway but the leak coming from the front seal area, resulted in the car being parked. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is just a seal.

It may work ok, but on a really light car I'm guessing that the governor will need tuning to make it shift properly. There is lots of info arround on tuning the more modern trans ie. turbo 350- 400. But tuning the cad trans may be a bit more difficult. I rebuilt mine back to stock...

r8odecay, Yeah.. I got the starter problem solved. First go round it was the solenoid, so I replaced that easy, and no probs. Second go round, it was due to me tryin to set the timing on my "new" engine. I started that ****er about 300 times in a day, and burned it up. So.. I payed a lil to have it rebuilt, and it's workin fantastic.

As for my trans.. not sure what's up, but I'm good at replacing stuff, and not so good at rebuilding it. So.. if you still got that trans.. wait a minute.. you're where??? e-mail me man. Let's talk.

The trans will work fine in a light car. The gov won't have to be fooled with unless you want to raise the shift points. It works strictly on speed. I ran one in a 57 olds and it took anything I could throw at it.
