I'm trying to order a water pump for my 54 235. I'm at work and can't get to my car. The parts guys need to know if it has a 5/8" or 3/8" shaft diameter. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

could it be the belt width he was asking about? that's what was different on them, either 3/8" or 5/8"

All '53-'54 cars used a 3/8 belt. '52 and earlier use a 5/8 belt. Since the water pump is the same, but the pulley is pressed on, that probably is what the confused counterman is trying to ascertain.

Just put a 1962 235 into my wife,s 54 and had a bit of grief with the water pump as the pulley on the new engine was too far forward.I took the pulley off the 54 pump and pressed it onto the shortened 62 shaft. The diameter of the pump shafts were both 5/8"

Well, giving them that info was no help (am I surprised?). So...they said "We'll fax you photo's of two pumps we think will work." Well, you know how faxes usually look. Looked like one photo was of a dog turd, the other of a cat turd.. I think the cat turd is the one I need but I better go down there tomorrow to see the pics in person...

Yep. I had to press it down and then try to cut it off. How do you think that went?

Yep, it ****ed but my buddy saved my *** and took it to his machine shop at work. That shaft is "F"ing tough.

BTW, mine was 5/8". Just make sure it has the short shaft on it.
