Don't recall how fast I've ever been but this post reminds me of a guy that I once worked with. He had a built Kawasaki Ninja that he said would top out at about 180 to 190. He told me of doing about a 160 mph pass down the middle of a convoy of Hell's Angels types. The act seemed to cause them a bit of consternation, according to the view in his mirror. He recommended that you do not try this at home or with that less than a full tank of fuel.
178 + change on my long course qualifying run at Bonneville on a 2004 GSXR 1000. It still had plenty in it, but I had to TRY and hold it to right around 175. Later in the meet the bike went 191+ change for a new record, but I wasnt on it. We ran out of time to make any more runs.
We hit around 140 on a regular basis on the front straight at ThunderHill during the AFM motorcycle races on anything larger than a 750. Then its on the brakes for the 100mph Turn 1. Full tilt boogy... fun stuff.
168 mph in a 1973 Trans-Am. 455SD. Up Highway #400 thru Holland Marsh, Ontario, in the early 80's. Front end started to shake a bit so I let off. MikeM
200 plus in a cesna 182 with a tailwind! Got caught going 157 in louisiana on my yamaha r1, speeding ticket $1100 and 2 days in jail!
Around 130 MPH in my 66 Chevelle and missed my turn off because I couldn,t get stopped with the single brake master cylinder. Today I had a customers car at 115 MPH clearing out the cobwebs.....
Just over 176. '75 Camaro w/ a 427, TH350, Hone overdrive ~1977 on Hwy 30 just south of Ames around 2:30 AM. We'd spun a rod in the 350 and just managed to get the BBC installed. After the zippy run down the four lane we got the car hauled down on an offramp...huge cloud of smoke wafts over the car...the exhaust is glowing red almost all the way to the back of the car! Reckon we shoulda re-jetted the carb for the 427?
140 mph...through the Fort Pitt Tunnel...you empty out and all you see is down town Pittsburgh, the lights and the stadiums...its fuckn sweeet at 70mph...140 was some serious shit, because you are on a bridge over the Mon river...ahhh to be real young and stupid...those were the days...
177 in a 348 GTS Ferarri 190 in a new Z06 Corvette 158 in a new Mazda RX8 131 on my 97 Softail custom (ask the TN HP Officer who pulled me over) 140+ in my 69 Camaro Many more trip past the ton mark... But I still aspire to hit the 200 mark...dunno when that'll happen.... but it's gonna....
Gotta give it to anyone who ever pulled off some high speeds in some old tin, as for me 140 in a late model mustang down 81, 2 in the morn. Passed a truck after I let off at about 130 looked like he wasn't even moving. That speed really gets you thinking (deer, cops, blowout) but it's a rush for sure!
Only problem with travelling fast is when you back down to the speed limit it could put you to sleep!
130mph in a Gran Prix, I was 16, 15 seconds later I received a speeding ticket for 105mph, I let off the throttle at the bottom of the hill, he tagged me at the top of the hill. He had to radio in to have them look up how much the fine was going to be. It was the Morris County, Kansas, Sherrif, Corky Woodward, he is the Sherrif that made the sex video with his wife and left it in the Camera for all the world to see. Also 120mph in a 1952 GMC pickup with a Buick 455. And 165mph on my Kawasaki zx9r Ninja. Charley
well over 110(pegged) in my 56 chevy 4 door. the car is a rattletrap, but after 85 smooths out like you wouldent believe, at 95 its like you are floating. i cant remember if i ever did peg it with the old powerglide and the original 265 powerpack ( actually it turns out one head wasent original, but a low compression 2bl head, but everything else was right). i do recall doing over 90 in it when i started smelling oil and heard a racket that turned out to be the #1 piston slapping the head from a spun bearing, that was with the 265 and powerglide. the car has stock suspension and at those speeds the blood certainly gets flowing, its something i have only done a small amount of times.
1955 F-100 panel with 351C 4V and rebuilt stock suspension - 100 mph 1969 Mercury Cyclone with 428 - 100 mph (interstate in downtown Cincinnati) 2003 NASCAR Taurus - 99.1 mph going into turn 3 at Bristol 1967 Schwinn StingRay - 20 mph on the rear wheel 1969 Mercury Cyclone 428CJ (different car, 120,000 on motor) - 93 mph (15.07et) at Indy Tracy
I did between 145 and 150mph in my 72 Pantera on a mile and a half straight, on Interstate 70, near Washington, PA.. Interesting speed fact: If you are traveling at 145 to 150 miles per hour in a 1972 Pantera and look at the Armco barrier six feet to your left... it becomes semi-transparent... weeeeeeeeeeeeee!
I used to live in Washington County and have been across the Fort Pitt bridge tons of time. 140! YIKES! Sweet little pick-up you have there! I made something for you. Take a look.
Another interesting speed fact ; Apparently , if you sneeze at 100mph then , due to the reflex that makes you shut your eyes , you are effectively blind for just over 300yds .
92 Eldorado ETC... not sure... but well over 130 on the PA turnpike 65 Satellite... 10.26 @ 137 in the 1/4 mile 85 Camero... 130? 406 sbc with B&M blower
About 195 in a special European version of a Porsche 930 Turbo -- had more to go, but I decided that when the cars on YOUR SIDE of the highway are coming at you at about 120, it is time to get out of it. I was about 25 years old -- on the interstate between LA and Vegas. The nice thing was that car was designed to go that fast -- stuck to the road, front end didn't get light or overstear in the front, etc.. The car probably had another 20 - 25 in it. Was a fun thing to do . . . plenty stupid and glad I'm here to talk about it.
Went 250.00 on Labor Day in 1981 at Indy. Got into the NHRA 250 MPH Club on that one. Hope to better that mark this year in recycler's nostalgia top fuel car.
145+ in a 1960 Studebaker Hawk. Speedo only goes to 120 and the needle was making it's way around again. Car was still saying "Go", but my nerves said "NO". My friend was no to happy. Scared the shit out of him too. We were passing cars that were passing cars in the third lane over . What a rush. ghcoe.
About 96 MPH in a '50 Chevy 6/powerglide down the Long Beach Freeway one night in 1964. OH! Maybe not the fastest I'd ever gone but for sure the most exciting at a high speed.
128 in my '70 BB Vette ( was like a zen thing for a while). 98 in my Beck spyder (Jimmy whispered go faster, I slowed down). And 80 in my 51 Meteor w/o carson top... the drivers door rattled open, freaked me out and left a grease stain.
over 100 in Baja on my sc 500 yamaha dirt bike, the backup truck was going 98 on the pavement and i was passing him on the dirt!
At 16 I went 165 in a 83 mustang on a 2 lane highway and when i was about 22 i went 190 on a yamaha r1 then the speedo went blant and was still only at 10grand on tach still had 2grand to go b4 redline scared the shit out of me then at 23 I went 148 in a 68 camaro that was a drag car i have sold it now tho(one of the many few cars i wish i still had)
