OK, i think the ultra long floor shifters have already been done time and time again, and besides-- i think converting a '60 Cadillac to a floor shifter just doesnt feel right....

So, im looking for inspiration-- i'd like to see if any of you folks have any pictures of any kustom column shifters.

Right now, for the Caddy, im thinking along the lines of an upswung chrome single bar w/ a grip.... ala beach cruiser style-- to me, this cadillac is in the same boat as a beach cruiser. comfortable, slow and stylish.

not sure if i like the idea of a long column shifter. looks funny. nice thick chromed one sounds like a good way to go.

    slapped these on the thunderbird.
I dont know if this is considered "custom". All i did was drill holes in the br*** knuckles, tap my shifter and directional internally, and install chrome allen bolts.

On our 50 Burb, with GM column shift automatic, I used a late model (90's ) Cadillac chrome swan neck shifter lever with a 56 Chevy dash knob drilled/tapped to match all the other knobs on the dash. Looks simple and elegant, maybe not so much "Kustom".

You want Kustom, maybe a decent knife handle (been done) or a rechromed cl***ic round handle Snap-On ratchet welded to the lever.

I wonder if my dad still has that old Falstaff tapper handle? hmmmmmmmmmm

I took it as meaning that he didn't want an automatic floor shifter, a la Lokar or Gennie.

  12. I agree with JohnnyG, you can't have enough chrome on a kustom if it's old school. Rags

Old ratchet with knurled handle. Cut off the stock GM handle and welded on the ratchet handle. Looks very industrial.

Kinda like that, but I was thinking the smooth, chrome handle ones, and the ratchet head at the end.

Sure the gl*** & br*** doorknob's been done before but that's alright...

The shifter was the easy part. Making the '71 Toploader 3.03 shift arms work with the '61 column took way more time than I should have spent. But the 3 OTTT is part of the details like vacuum wipers that keep the feel - familiar and fun.

yep... no, i have no intent of going manual in a Caddy. Im talking the difference between auto floor versus column. im doing column w/ the Hydramatic auto trans.
