Well, at least Primedia doesn't own it anymore. But, I don't see this being a good move either. Ron Burkle is a money man, nothing more and nothing less, and he seems to be very proud of that. If shutting down Hot Rod at some point will help make him money somewhere else, he won't bat an eye to make it disappear. I don't see that happening any time soon, but Burkle has no sense of loyalty or history so it's not beneath him.

Sounds like a good time NOT to be in the magazine business.

Just thumbed through the latest issue at my local Circle K just now. Has a big article on Foose' hemi futuristic roadster. It is on the cover too. My opinion, me no likey! I think that Hot Rod mag has lost it's flavor. Some reason I get more out of looking at Garage and Rod&Custom and the others that are out there. If it does fold, I won't miss it. KNUX!

Well, with all that is going on there I guess I won't get my November issue until late July. My monthly renewal notice on a sub. that runs out in 2010 will no doubt be late also.:D

used to be that was all they featured...now they have decent stuff pretty often...it has gotten better. It's a general interest magazine, not everything will appeal to everyone.

anyways, DF the editor is on the hamb....

Just my 2 cents, but I'd like to see Hot Rod change their content to something along the lines of Rod & Kulture. They have the name, the pull and the archives to do it. It could be really cool to literally embrace their roots and the movement that they helped foster.

Hot Rod is the flag ship- NO WAY is that going down. There's way more they would cut before that was EVER an issue. Like the 2 Cl***ic Truck Books- Rob's would stay, but the other would really have to fight its case for survival. Dave does a ton of work for that company- and the numbers for Hot Rod remain strong so only an IDIOT would buy a company to kill off it's strong books.

Just my opinion.Don't want to piss any others off. I just find the other magazines more interesting. When was the last time you saw a '30's,'40's to '50's mild custom in it? Like a big spread coverage? KNUX! Kirk, you said it to a "T"!

Sorry- but the "suits " FIRMLY believe that retro and history DO NOT sell magazines (despite showing them all the new strong ***les along that line a MILLION times)- I faced it on a monthly basis- and I DO NOT miss it!

I was hoping it would be the other way around--I could really use an extended vacation right now.

At least they should still be able to get the relaunch HRD annual out...maybe.

I am just tired of seeing all the big block, high tech, out of my price range stuff that they have in their issues. Sometimes it is good to go back to your "roots" to regain what you have lost. Like I said.....just my opinion. KNUX!

Somebody needs to tell them that the same "old" guys that want the retro stuff are the ones that need the "male enhancement" products the seem to have no problem selling ads to ;)

Haha, I think we all felt a little ashamed once those ads started showing up in our books.

  16. Check out Street Thunder magazine if you haven't. It steers away from all the "shop built, you can't afford it buddy" type stuff, plus a lot of member rides.

    Yeah, it rocks.

I'd absolutely love to see more tips and ideas for those of us who are monetarily challenged. I know its a different venue, but I recently watched a series of Extreme 4x4 (the Spike Tv weekend show - think the name is correct) where they built a 'budget' 4 wheel rock crawler. They used "leftover parts" that the 'scrounged' from the other shops, and still spent almost $8000.00 to build it! Who's ****ing budget is that?

I enjoy any of the car mags, as each has its own flavor, ideas, concepts, and designs. Its the same reason I enjoy going to car shows - to see what others have for ideas and things they can come up with. Its the same here with the HAMB - I love the idea of Myke's who used banger rods for headlight mounts and I cannot remember who it was that used rods as supports and actual pistons for tail/brakelights. It was an awesome design and idea.

I just subscribed to Hotrod recently for a 3 year subscription for only around $8.00. If nothing else, when I'm done reading it on my throne, I'll wipe my *** with it and then flush.

Hopefully Hot Rod doesn't dissappear,if only because it has such history.I really enjoyed the article on the Kennedy Bros Bomb Factory in the june issue.:D

  23. Get used to seeing hi-tech stuff in any of the magazines. What the hell do ya' think the advertisers are selling, Model A Ford connecting rods???

    Check out Magneto: http://www.kustomink.com.au/magneto.html

The articles are straight out of HAMB-like minds! They even featured an article that mentioned 50's racing and "Square Rollbars & Cool Cars."

  25. Lets see...............EMAP...Primedia.........new owners..........nope, I dont see much changing in the slow downward spiral.

As an advertiser in SR & R&C it can only get worse like it did when Primedia bought it. Ad cost went up and distribution and subs down. They always quote these big numbers but what they don't tell you is the grandmother factor, Door to door sales for little johnny who is 10 years old. It isn't going to get better for the rod rags. Guys like me are fossils in the new world of (hotrodding) but I really like what I do, and will keep on doing it.

This does not bode well for R&C and other smaller Primedia mags...
