The infamous UK car club `The Low Flyers`

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by surf monkey, May 12, 2007.

  1. Theres an interesting thread going on at the moment on the UK NSRA website about the infamous low flyers...this was the mid 80`s and i dont think a lot of the UK rodding fraternity were ready for this `traditional` view of hotrodding and as one article said at the time `you either loved them or you hated them`....Pat Ganahl did an article about them for street rodder which was highlighted to him by HAMBer Japchris.....the thread is mainly asking where are they now

you`ve gotta remember this is the mid 80`s....but there are certainly some interesting cars there.....

loads of photos on there...check it out

oh man that brings back memories. I remember the weekend at hailing island, the flyers were there as always and on the sat afternoon ( i think it was sat) they all came out to their cars and one by one fired them all up. In a line they drove out the campsite and onto the beach, we followed to see what they were doing only to see them hand paint all they cars blue with a white stripe.
They then drove back to the campsite and parked up as they were before. Just mad!!

    Two actually, Blue and White!
Originally they were all painted various shades of primer, off they went for a little drive down to the beach (via a D.I.Y. store, I think) and came back Blue with a white stripe. Mad as a box of Frogs.

thats a cool post, I saw a bunch of what I think was there stuff in the early 90's at Knebworth, sure helped steer me down the right path :) there were small groups of folks down here doing similar stuff at the same time and i guess inthe USA but these guys got in the public eyc and were very influential.

I have heard the story about those guys painting their cars blue with the white stripes a couple of times. The LOW FLYERS deserve a place in hot rod history. They were young guys building proper hot rods long before we did over here. Kev Elliot stops by my shop once in awhile, he showed me a cool pic of all them sitting in their hot rods. I think it might have been the Custom Car photo shoot.

I didn't know so many pictures existed of these guys. It makes for great viewing and far less of us would be doing what we're doing now without them....

There are a lot of these pics that weren't actual Low Flyers, they caused such an uproar at the time there were many who quickly embraced the style. Me being one of them I guess, the British traditional scene would have taken a lot longer to develop if it wasn't for the original few.
