I had my 69 crewcab up for sale. Offered seperate or as a package deal with the new engine and 5 speed I had intended for it. A guy I don't know wants just the truck and tells me he is coming Sunday afternoon to look at it. A friend of mine buys the whole package for my asking price about 1/2 hour before the other guy shows. Now he is ranked and says he will tell the FORDifications site where I had it advertised what he thinks of "them" because I didn't keep my word to him. All I told him was that he had called first and that it was still available. My past experience puts the Sunday lookers as more often than not a no-show. First cash generally gets the deal. How would you guys have called it?

I might have called the guy first, but cash in hand always seals the deal. I think you did ok.

Had a couple HAMB guys pissed at me because I bought a truck they thought they had "dibs" on. Joke was on me in the end because I cut most of it up and threw it away- but still these guys are pissed. I didn't ***** to the guy who sold me the rusty pile because I'm a big boy who knows how to look at cars- I just didn't look hard enough.

I went and looked at a mustang, called the guy the next day and told him I wanted it. He said "get here fast I have a guy coming to look at it now." I got there about 2 min. before the other guy, gave him the cash and he said, the car is yours. The guy showed up and needless to say was alittle pissed he sold it to me. Point of the story is, cash talks bullsh*t walks.
The other guy should have been quicker.;)

If the other guy really wanted to buy it, he would have come to look at it right away and brought some $$$ with him.

    You did fine....

Unless he made a firm offer to buy, there was no contract, and no obligation on anybody's part. You were in early negotiations with him when a firm offer came in.

You didn't do anything wrong. You just did what millions of stores do everyday. I'm a little leary of people who what to "look" on Sundays. I've found that they show up at dinner time, want to stand around talking down the car and then they want to make you an offer at about half the asking price, acting like there doing you a favor. Next, they want to write you a check on Sunday so the check can't be verified. Been there and done all that. You did the right thing by selling to the first guy, cash is king. Good luck.

  12. Been on both sides...
It really comes down to the sellers discression when nothing is in writing and no $$$ has changed hands. I looked at a '62 Olds recently and while I was checking it out, another guy pulled up and handed over a wad of cash. I missed out, but I would have done the same thing. I also picked up some parts at a swap meet because the guy first in line was an a**hole.

    Don't feel bad. PERIOD.

If the guy came from out of state or something to look at it, I would have held off at least until he got there, so he'd have a shot at it at full price or more before you sold it to the other guy. But if he just lives across town, I would have called him up and told him the car is sold.

I would have taken the full price money either way, but it was rude of you not to at least call the guy to tell him it's sold or wait until he got there to sell it to either him or your buddy.

Lots of people say they coming to look and never show. If you had no agreement...don't sweat it at all. If you had his phone number it would have been cool to call him.

I would had the courtesy to call him and tell him it was sold, so he would not have had to make the trip

This thread goes to show why it's O.K. to call someone at 7 in the morning. If you are going to sell to the first money in hand don't get pissed when someone is making sure they are first with money in hand.

Yeah.... It's not like he made you an offer on it, then you accepted the offer, then he just never bought it, right?

Cash is king, first to pay gets the toys, just don't be pissed when something you're negotiating a price on dissappears before you pay for it....

  18. WANNA REALLY PISS SOME ONE OFF?

I went to look at a car an hour away across town. Made the guy an offer, he agreed. I had the keys in my hand and then he renegged when some ***hat called him as I stood there and told him not to sell it and would give him more. I had not paid him at that point. He wanted to start a bidding war on the car, So I informed the weasel of my displeasure and left. Funny thing is I got home and still had the keys!!! The guy had my number from earlier and had the balls to call me to ask if I had taken the keys.... er sorry nope. clunk in the garbage. Payback is sweet.

Sold it, cash in hand, for the whole package vs. parting it out. Sounds like he doesn't have a leg to stand on. Plus, you took care of a friend. I don't see why you're bothered. Sure it ****s to find out that you're a day late and a dollar short.

Treat others as you would like to be treated. If you gave your word that you would let the "Sunday" guy have first crack at it, you should have given him that chance OR at least contacted him before selling to your friend.

When buying a car nothing counts until there's cash in hand. The same goes for just about anything you plan to sell. I was trying to rent my late fathers house and had a real nice couple who wanted it. I was nice enough to sit on the place for 2 weeks until there lease was up just to have them skip out at the last minute. You never know if that guy was going to change his mind and not show without a call or anything. First guy with the asking prices takes the prize.

you did alright..its all part of the etiquette we've been talking about..I try and live by the (real) golden rule..cell phones are handy tools in this situation..in the end we have something for sale and the first person with reasonable offer/cash gets it..the tough situation was the guy on the phone telling the seller to hang on to it as he would give more money while a buyer was standing there, wouldn't want to be in that situation, would shut it down pretty quick in favor of the guy standing there cash in hand....

FIRST MONEY WINS, especially since the first guy did NOT commit to buy, only look.

I miss out on some stuff because the other guy got there before me an bought it. I was second and miss out, that life. People need to live with it. I would not feel bad about what happen. The guy did not say he would take it on the phone.

I've been on both sides several times - lost a couple deals showing up a few minutes too late and seeing cash change hands... been the guy handing over the cash when the other party shows up too - I've quit holding stuff for people since the internet became the way to advertise - there are too many people that get "hot" on something and promise they want it and never show up....

You did fine - heck I would have held it for a "real friend" if they told me that they wanted it and needed a few days to pull together the funds.

Selling a motorcycle right now dirt cheap and have had probably 6 people say that it's such a great deal they want it with just the internet pics and are going to be calling tonight when I get off work and have cash in hand... I told them all the same thing - come on out and pick it up. After 4 days I've still got the bike and no cash in my hand... if someone puts cash in the hand they own it - regardless of what someone else tells me "they're going to do" or "they have cash to buy this weekend".
