Well **** happens. Son grenaded the 2.4 cyl in his 99 grand am yesterday evening. Local phone search at wrecking yards for engine turned up Zilch. Our buddy Bob at Owens couldn't help either. So if anyone has, or knows where I can get a good deal on one let me know. Found one on CarPARTsearcher.com for about a grand including shipping but hope to find something well under that. I'm In Lubbock Tx so shipping cost is an issue. Something in the DFW area would work too since the oldest offspring is going to school there. (anybody want to adopt a 6'5" 250 lb. 17 yr old?)
trash the car. They had a real POS engine. I sold many out of wrecks;none lived thru the 90 day warranty. Whatever you lose now will save you money in the future.
SUPER hard to work on. Unles it's worth more than what a mechanic would charge to do the whole job, I'd dump it.
That's the job we gave up on. It was a friend's car, two years later, I think it's still not running.
When I worked for my dad, we quoted one out... it was less money to swap the motors than it was to R&R the headgaskets.
This is a sign that you need to heed. Buy your son a hot rod. Something old and cool that appreciates in value. Like a 36 Ford coupe. Or a Model A. Or anything else that fits the traditional mold.
Or just a boring old, belly ****on, everybodies got one, small block Chevy. 70s-80s trucks are cheap to buy, cheap parts, easy to work on, and cool rides, though not a traditional rod. See them all the time for the price of a Grand Am motor. Make great parts haulers for when he finds the pre-'64 iron. I've had at least a half dozen, I drive one 120 miles every day, got it for a grand.
Yep same one frank. when we got it running again it sounded ok but must have been hurt worse that we though. Probably bent a rod. It lasted 3 days before it gave up. Thinking about putting a motor in it and putting a for sale sign on it.
Snyder Salvage in Holland, Tx. has em. They are just a few minutes away from the track in Temple/Academy. http://www.snydersalvage.com/ Ignore the online pricing. Call them and tell em the Radical Rides, in Hutto, sent you that way. May help... could hurt... Guess we'll see.
Let me guess timming belt snapped and took out some valves? just happend to my moms 2001 last fall. I was going to fix it but she didnt want to wait for me. she had a shop do it and they put in 6 or so new valves and i think it cost around 1200.00 99's didnt have quad 4's i dont think. but its been a few years since i worked on late models now. Sorry i cant help ya with a new motor, but if it is a snapped belt i would think about fixing it your self and selling it right away. Edit: it is a damn quad 4. why did they make those motors for so long! your screwed sell it now while you can haha
Its got a fist sized hole in the block behind the starter. Wish it was just the timing belt. Found a motor 50 miles away for 650 at Dulaney's wrecking. Cant tell me how many miles are on it. Thinking about going and getting and picking up a FOR SALE sign on the way back.
El Paso, Midland and Odessa are not that fars away from you. Heres a website that has alot of junkyards. http://www.junkyards.com/directory2/ Josh
dude, get rid of the car. buy something else, because you will most likely have trouble with the replacement motor too. cut your losses and dont buy a quad 4 again.
A 2.4 Twin Cam is NOT the same as the old Quad 4. They look the same, but have better internals. They are chain driven, no timing belt. My mother-in-law has 325,000 miles on her 2000 2.4l Grand Am, and has never done a thing to it except change the oil(and not very regularly). I just sold a 2.4l out of a 00 Alero for $500.
