Selling an off topic truck on eBay, and the guy asked if it was ok to bid on it. He is located in the UK. He has a hell of a good rating.. 500++ with all positives. He knows how to arrange shipping and everything. Should I let him bid?
Yeah I wouldn't be overly worried about selling to the UK cause we're all at bring stuff over. He's taking the risk as he can't check it out and he has to give you cash before you will release the truck. Give him your number and get him to call you to discuss payment, shipping etc. If you don't like to sound of him don't sell to him. Also check what the ebay cover is and I'm sure you'll be more comfortable. What ever you do, just let him know as we all get sick of people just ignoring us when we try to buy stuff from the States. Good luck PM me the deatils if you like and I'll see if he's know around. Steve
I sell overseas all the time, just make sure you're paid in full and the payment clears before releasing the car. Dave
I send a lot of stuff to friends in the UK who can't get guys here to ship to England....Its crazy, just tell them that you won't ship till payment is FULLY CLEARED through your bank, and if he's willing to arrange shipping, go for it!! Just set a time limit for pickup.
What other stuff has he bid on lately ? That should help you decide. You would be surprised how many ebaymotors transactions are won by overseas bidders.
Let him bid. Just make sure all your I's are dotted before letting go of the truck. Who knows, maybe he only ends up bumping the bid $600 dollars for you.
I just sold my truck to a Hamber that lives in England...actually went smoother than most in-US transactions.
I'd say let him bid once you've chatted with him via the phone. If he sounds like he checks out to you, let him bid. Make sure he knows it'll be his nickel to arrange for and provide shipping for the truck, and that payment will be cleared and in your hand prior to it ever leaving your possession.
Sure you could block the guy from bidding, but it sure was nice he read your auction (***uming you said something like US only in the ad or shipping details...) and he contacted you first. There are probably others that will bid and not have contacted you first... I'd agree - give the guy the number and see if he calls - if he calls at least then he's serious enough to spend a couple bucks calling and chatting about it. I'd let him bid. If you're unsure about the deal and worried about his payment then I'd look at using an escrow company - and make sure there isn't fine print in there if he successfully scams the escrow company - most scammers stay way away from the escrow companies since they're out the money up front... Of course the escrow company takes a nice fee for their services
shouldn't be any trouble if he's into the scene. I've just bought an A sedan and my mates just got a 46 Hudson truck for the U.S. We both paid by international money transfer, thats means we go into our bank and get them to transfer the money direct to your account, you just give your bank details and it's done, takes 5 working days and get him to pay the costs at his bank. The U.S. is very attractive to us Brits at this time because the £ is worth $2 and lots of us are taking advantage, thats why we're buying the cars and why UK.Comet and me are flying over just for Paso.
Have him fly over with CASH in hand and end the auction early........save the h***les. If he's serious, he will be willing to do it.
And that will add about a grand or so to the price when all's said & done...He's still gotta ship it to the UK, pay tax, registration, import duty etc...
But if they are scooping are cars @ $.50 on the dollar....I don't see how round trip air fair could hurt the deal. If there are THAT MANY people from overseas gobbling up our cars because of the dollar difference, there surely must be someone who has noticed the chance to make a buck and be acting as a stateside broker for all these overseas deals. I guess I'm a pessimist from being scammed out of $5,400 remainder payment on a deal I did 3 years ago on a 36 Ford....and that was only into Canada. There is NO subs***ution for a good ole handshake in person.
Don't think many over here would be up for that, unless they were flying over anyway, would be way too much £££. Cars are cheap in the US compaired to the UK, but only because of the £ to $ rate, but there's much more to pay out as well. Shipping is $900, insurance $200 ish, then there's dock fees in the UK at $600 and tax at 17.5% on the cost of the car and shipping if the car is newer than 1950, flights of $850 on top, too much.
The Exchange rate is good for the Brits right now, but not to the point that they'd be picking up stuff for .50 on the Dollar. The Pound probably was higher to begin with... I wouldn't hesitate to sell a car to a oversea's bidder, as long as I dont have to get involved with the shipping, customs, etc. AND all the money has cleared...
If there are THAT MANY people from overseas gobbling up our cars because of the dollar difference, there surely must be someone who has noticed the chance to make a buck and be acting as a stateside broker for all these overseas deals. There are companies over here that offer to import any car you want and there are people who just fly over, buy a few cars, ship them over, pay all the taxes and **** then sell them on, but it's lots cheaper to do it yourself. Like I said before, I've just imported a '30 sedan, first time importing a car and had some good help for others that had done it before, it's easy, but stressful and can be risky for us. I had problems getting my seller to send on the ***tle and had to phone his work and lay some **** onto his boss, and my mates truck got smashed on three corners.
I've only sold one thing to someone in England, but he ended up not paying me for it. It was part my fault for being stupid, and part his fault for being a complete ***hole. It wouldn't stop me from selling to people in England or overseas again, you just have to be more careful about it. Like everyone above me has said before, make sure the check fully clears before you release the car.
Quote: meatalshapes...the exchange rate is good for the Brits right now,but not to the point they'd be picking stuf up for .50 on the Dollar. sorry...I never bothered to check on the exchange rate...I was just going by what nutrocker said..........
you were right, the rate is $1.98 to the £. I think where it falls down is on the extras that we have to pay, by the time we've paid everthing it usually works out at £ to $. But thats good for us.
I thought it was favorable because of the difference between the exchange rate now, and the exchange rate, say, a year or so ago....
Accept payment ONLY by wire transfer directly into your bank account. International money orders/Cashier's checks are less than worthless. They can "bounce" 6-8 weeks after your car is gone, not only will your car be gone, you'll have to pay the bank back too. Signed, Someone with 3000+ feedback on eBay.
You can also use a athorney in US, he will have the ***le in hand and release it only when the money will be cleared on his account, that is security for you and him. I did this way the first time I bought a car in US as I was scarred thet the seller would desapear with my money. Is it a lot more risky for us in Uk than you, we are sending the money to people we don't know, buying a car that we didn't see for real and even if we have million of pictures who says that the car or parts will be like in the pictures. Don't be paranoid just be carefull.... I wanted to buy a 51 chevy hre on the Hamb last october, the sseller was too paranoid,I offered him to call him and making a bank transfer, even had a friend from florida who could do the money transfer from his to the seller bank account. The seller refused all my offers. Luckily for me because I found few weeks after, here on the Hamb, a 1933 pickup ford project, the seller "wonhunglo" helped me out, we spoke few time on the phone and finaly as I was planning ot come for holiday in february kept it for me to pick it up during my holiday, not even asking for a deposite or anything. first day I was in california, went to see the truck paid in cash and had it ship over here.
That's the only way I'd deal out of the country again. 3 & 1/2 weeks after the last of 3 payments was bank to bank wire transferred I get a call from my bank saying the last $5,400 wire transfer was bogus. $5,400 down the pooper, never to be seen again! Car was already picked up. Lesson learned.
