    :)

I believe the most commonly used rear end for your application is a early 60's F-100 rear. They are of the 9 inch Ford series and have the correct wheel bolt pattern ... for the 40 Ford wheels. They are 61 to 62 inches wide ... measured this way ...

The early F-100 rears are easy to find, are easy to get brake parts for .... and accept most any Ford center section with a gear ratio range of 2.50 to 6.50

my '28 sedan uses a 61-3/4" ford 9", some 6" wide reverse rims i made, and 8.90x15 crossplies. it has about 1.5" between body and tyre each side which i think is about right.

Something you might check if you are going to go the F100 route is to measure the frame width where the spring brackets mount to the truck frame and compare them to the A frame width. I have an AA frame under my truck, and I kind of got a bit lucky. I was able to cut the frame mounted/riveted spring brackets off of the F100 truck and re-mount them to the frame on my AA. The only modification I had to make due to the width of the springs is to loosen the U-bolts on the rear and allow the front of the springs to be 'pinched' together a bit to fit the frame. The best part is that I didn't have to modify the rear end in any way to get it to fit the spring perches.

However, due to the height of the stock F100 suspension, I'm going to wind up flipping the axle to the top side of the springs to get the frame down. The top of my frame rails currently sits at 28" in the rear. I figure a flip will drop it down into the 22" range. A C-notch and blocks will allow it to drop even father.

If you're interested, I can try to find the link for you where I posted the progress pics about mounting up the entire 9" rear setup.

The rear is 4-linked, so mounting isn't a problem, its just trying to find what rear i can use!

    thanks

I used a 67 ford rear, had to lengthen it 3" on one side. Made both axles the same length. Made sense and was really easy.

Got mine from a 78 f-150. Perfect fit running a 6" wheel with centered backspace.

I used a 57-8 Ford Pickup 9inch. It is a liitle narrow, needs a rim with some positive offset. I ran 15 inch Reversed 50 Merc wheels for a few years, worked fine. If you want to run 16 inch Early Ford Spokes with Spacer/Adaptors those will clear. I run a Modified A rear spring and 36 Ford rear wishbones...More room inside than a 4 link...

If you are going to set the car up LOW to the ground so the top of the tire is near the beltline then you need to use a Ford truck rear. Ok you dont have to, but its the easiest to find 9" rear, and is wide enough fo the tires to clear the body. I think some of the 70's 80's 9" truck rears were 65" mount to mount. 60's rears a little narrower.
