I pulled my carb to have it rebuilt and found this crack, it does not go all the way through. Is it something to worry about?
I'm guessing its a stock q-jet chevy intake? don't worry, replacements are next to free, or you get to upgrade!
IF it were mine, I probably wouldn't worry about it. If it were a customer's or someone else's, I'd let them know and recommend changing it. I'd also let them know if it were mine, I'd leave it alone and monitor it, but would want them to be as informed as possible. That area should have no real stresses on it other than holding down the carb, so I don't think it'd be that much of an issue - unless it starts to come apart. Then you've got bigger problems.
Yeah, make sure no loose pieces can get ****ed into the engine. If it gets caught between the valve and the piston....big BANG! Otherwise, a little leakage from one side of a dual plane intake to the other side shouldn't cause any problems.
Drill at the end of the crack - that will prevent it from spreading more then run it - or if you're worried about it and want the stock look - pick up a stock aluminum off some early 80's cars - they look the same, can be painted to look like iron and drop around 20-25 lbs off the nose - plus they can be had at the pick-a-part places for like $15 around here...
Would I worry? Yeah a little. Would I do something about it if the intake was bolted to an engine? Nope. But if it was off, would be worth grinding out just to be safe
Hello..Remember, cracks never stop, like bwiencek said,,drill a hole at each end..First, remove the intake. duane.
