Mallory Mag spark coil

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jrblack30, May 18, 2007.

  1. I picked up a few old Mallory Mag Spark coils along with an engine saver. Any one have experience with these old units? How do you wire these up? Anybody have a wiring diagram?

    Thanks

  3. I tried to call Mallory they claim it is not their product and have never sold them. Something about " Its not in our computer so we didn't make them ". Thats a line of BS, code for I don't know now leave me alone. I have two of these and both test out for continuity but not sure how to hook them up. It has two different terminal marked for (+) and one for (-)? These are very early unit they are in Black bakelite housings with the bolt down type connector for the coil to dizzy wire.

Anybody have some advise on these?

  5. I have an NOS Magspark distributor for my flathead six- it has instructions in it for wiring- dated 1953

the way I understand the Magspark system, it is for dual points, and changes the way the points fire.
Normal dual points open the first set, then during the duration of the first, the second set opens, then the first set closes, then the second set closes, creating a longer duration spark than a single point system.
the Magspark sytem is wired different inside the distributor, and uses a transformer box to work the spark so that each set of points produces a separate spark.

so normal dual points go zzzzaaaaaapppp
    the Magspark goes ZAP ZAP

the Magspark transformer box can be used with any dual point distributor that has been properly rewired, and the Magspark distributor can be rewired to be used as a regular dual point with regular coil.

I still need NOS 6 volt positive ground and 12 volt negative ground transformers, to go with my NOS distributor.
