Street racing was a way of life for me and about a dozen regulars. We formed a group called Michigan Street Unlimited. I would go to bed at 6pm on a fri night and get up around 11pm and be racing 'til sunrise. We never hurt anyone or ourselves. As years went on we watched it become the thing for drug dealers and gang bangers and it faded away. Many of us ended up as bracket racers. Some are still bracket racing 25yrs later. It doesn't always have to end up as bad news. Common sense used to be more common.

I'm happy you didn't get fined and it worked out well. I can't say a daytime race is a good idea, but I'm thinkin it wasn't just wreckless abandon. Good luck in the future.

Oh yeah..."GIMME THOSE SCISSORS RIGHT NOW!!"

Wow. Tough town if your jousting. I've never actually run AT another car with a big long pipe thing trying to knock the driver out of their car.

    I don't care who you are, that's a funny story!:D

The tuner idiots are still out killing the whole hot rodding thing with not only their stupid looking and stupid sounding cars. It is also their stupid movies that glamorize street racing and make it seem like it is 'THE' thing to do in LA and Tokyo. Too much of the world sees America through the eyes of our movies as it is. Now they think any modified car is racing in the streets with graphic crashes.

Not all of them are but there can still be some graphic crashes. Only took them 4 hours to cut my buddies leftovers out of his car in Austin about 10 years ago after he went off of an elevated section of highway off ramp at 135. Casket was a nice color...

  3. Y'all are wound to tight everybody's done it or your lying or you don't have a life. Cut the girl some slack it was an amuzing story and I for one liked the outcome. Take care, Rags

Good stories for sure. When most folks get a bit older they seem to realise that risking the lives of other people's kids for your entertainment is probably not the right thing to do. When you're 17 you don't see it that way.

  5. I also got pulled over about three times in my old 32, I sewar I wasnt doing anything wrong. Turned out I was right too, each time they just wanted a good look at the car!
Yup, cops can be rev heads too.

Your all kidding your self if you say "I have never Raced!". I f you choose to accelerate while merging and get in front of someone instead of behind them, that is a race...from a roll.

Drag racing on the street is stupid , but so is rush hour traffic

I grew up with my dad being a state patrolman , he gave me my first ticket ..... we used a side road called the sanford road to race on , rules where in case of cops , right lane turns right and left turns left at the intersection ..... the dumd *** I was racing after we saw the flashing lights behing us , almost runs me off the road . anyway I end up getting cought , the cop that walking up to me looked familiar , yep my dad . he told me the reason he stopped me was a broken tail light , no way I keep my hot rod truck perfect ..... as we walk back to show me he tells me see it`s broken , right after he kicked it in , it was ! I took my broken truck home with a faulty vehicle ticket .... the subject never came up ............

Yeah, last week I went through a speed trap (the ones with motorcycles and laser radar) with no idea how fast I was going (speedo works when it wants to) and BOTH cops stepped into the street to give me the thumbs up! I never even saw them until then - I was like ! until I realized they were just diggin' the ride. Whew. :D
About that Texas racing = jail thing, be careful.

Danimal - you knew that guy? Holy ****. My dad was below at 183/290 (can't remember, been ten years) when it happened. How the HELL did he make it over the rails? If you don't mind talking about it.

I SUGGEST YOU JUST KEEP YER ****ING SHIRT ON !

ALL I AM SAYING IS ..... IF YER A HOT ROD OF ANY SORT & HAVE BEEN FOR THE BETTER PART OF YOUR LIFE .... YOU HAVE STREET RACED OR AT MINIMUM .... LIGHT TO LIGHT.

AS FOR EVERYONE ELSE UP IN ARMS ABOUT HOW DANGEROUS IT IS .. THIS IS VERY TRUE ...... AND I WOULD NEVER WANT TO SEE OR BE INVOLVED WITH KILLING OR HURTING SOMEONE DUE TO STREET RACING.

BUT HAVE YA TAKIN A RIDE DOWN THE FREEWAY OR THRU A LARGER CITY LATELY ??????

STREET RACING HAS NOTHING ON THESE ****ERS DRIVING 80+ WEAVING IN & OUT OF TRAFFIC TO GET TO WORK OR WHEREEVER THEY ARE GOING

EVERYDAY DRIVING THIS DAY IN AGE IS WAY MORE DANGEROUS THAN STREET RACING, THE AGE OF 120mph ECONOBOXS & HIGH END CAR DRIVERS THAT THINK THEY OWN THE WHOLE DAMN ROAD.

DONT TURN THIS THREAD INTO A BASHING OF STREET RACING, WE HAVE ALL DONE IT.

MAYBE THINK ABOUT HOW YOU DRIVE YER DAILY, HOW FAST YA DRIVE IT, AND ARE YOU A COURTEOUS DRIVER ??

AND AS FOR COMING HERE TO ANNOY PEOPLE ... THATS NOT MY INTENTION .... IM JUS TIRED OF PEOPLE TRYING TO BE OR ACT AS IF THEY ARE ABOVE WHO A HOT RODDER REALLY IS.

AND AN IMMATURE IDIOT ... PROBABLY HAVE BEEN A TIME OR MORE, BUT I AM A REAL PERSON, NOT A FAKE *** WANNA BE.

I ENJOY LIFE, I ENJOY MY KIDS, AND I ENJOY BEING WHO I AM.

City of Austin if you get caught street racing your car can be impounded and sold at auction. In Texas you lose your drivers license. Not to mention the fines, jail etc.
I'm an old ****er, grew up street racing. Different time, now it's not worth the potential h***le, besides I don't have anything really fast anymore anyway.:)

He was my best friend and room mate in college. We did a ton of stuff like road trips to Chicago, New York, and Toronto on a moment's notice. He was also a straight A student with an IQ in the genius range. Problem was, he couldn't deal with it.

We used to get drunk and run over shopping carts in the snow at the grocery store just because. He loved to drive EVERYTHING fast and stupid. We did the 5 hour drive to Toronto in 3 1/2 to get donuts. The CN tower is COLD in the winter when you hug it...

He had a full ride scholarship for UT Austin in Physics and a job at Motorola and a sponsor in AA. He got a girlfriend, blew off the sponsor, blew the scholarship, and stayed at Motorola. Super Bowl Sunday of '96 I believe he and his girl got in a fight on the phone. I guess he'd had a pop or two and took his Acura Integra RS out to 'straighten her out.' They estimated he was doing 135 when he lost it. Bounced off the sides 2 or 3 times above and came down the drop peanut ****er side down.

Casket was that pewter color that GM uses on their trucks. His mom flipped out and blew a gasket and is still not the same.

Buried him in Ypsilanti, MI. His birthday is 19 June. I still owe him $65. I think about him quite a bit. Especially when my kids are hanging with their pals and having a good time.

I'm going out to work on my kid's truck now.

Yeah, times are changing. Street racing was never safe, but we've all done it. Common sense is dwidling these days as well. Its just not really worth it anymore, they really nail ya to the cross now.

I think the biggest difference in the street racing we used to do is the density of the population. I mean - we raced in the middle of nowhere with nice straights and no traffic coming either way. Today it's known as the South extension of Mopac and you'd get killed just stopping your car let alone racing at any hour out there. Same road - just a few hundred thousand more people added. Stir in some wobbly pop and trouble gets there sooner. At least we have a great track an hour South in Seguin (called San Antonio Raceway for what reason I have no idea).

All i said was that if you were~are into cars WE ALL DID IT !!!!!

    Thats my point ..

Seems there are some HOLYER THAN THOU people on here acting as if they have never got in some sort of street racing.

If yer a true blood HOT RODDER of anykind .... you have done it !

Thats all. Its like we have a herd of HOT RODDERS here that really dont have a clue of what a hot rod is.

Why do guys put a big engine in a lil body if the main objective is to not go fast ?

Isnt that what a HOT ROD IS ????

As long as there are fossil fuels available for consumption and busted knuckles covered in grease.......there will be racing.....

Going fast on crowded public streets during waking hours...WRECKLESS DRIVING.

Going fast on a desolate patch of road at 2-3 A.M. while most people are tucked away in bed.........RACIN'

Now shut up and meet me out at Paradise road......

To interject a humorous note, I "street race" every single day...I get on I-45 south to work and drive as fast as traffic will allow and in the afternoons, get on I-45 north and do the same. Some days it's 85, some days it's 25, but I'm racing every *** I can in the direction I'm going.

And, on the wayhome today (yes, I had to work so I was pissed to work on Saturday, 10 hours...I'm salary), I pulled up behind a vette in the 4th lane driving 55 holding up traffic...blew by him at 70 waving him over to the right.

This has turned into a ***** between Hot Rods and Customs. The hot rods are kinda for street racing (safely) if possible. And the customs said they never did it but at the tracks. I like both Hot Rods and Customs....

    Street racing stories...
Good for you mama on not getting pinched. You're lucky.

Back in the era of 1986 to 1992 I street raced constantly.
There was always $$$ on the line, bragging rights, etc. to having the most bad ***ed car in Tulsa, (HA HA, High school dreams of grandeur), and plain old pride on the line.

So here is how we did it, we talked **** all week at school, and after we graduated high school we still talked ****. I had a 70 Maverick with a home built Boss 302, and a 68 Dart with a BUILT 340.

Whomever was talking **** eventually we would run into each other on Memorial drive. Highly cruised, highly trafficed and policed.
We would always decide on a place to race that was out of the way.

I won many a race in some NEW subdivision main drag that wasn't built out yet.

My very last STREET race was in an industrial park around 9:30 PM.
Large crowd by the "finish line". WAY too large. $2000 on the line.
Dart vs. 65 mustang. Think about that and you know how it ends.....

    EXCEPT....

65 Mustang driver is "high as a kite"
there are around 100 people in a parking lot about 1000 feet away.
The mustang has a half a turn of steering play, and a worn out 289 with a C4.

    We start

I half throttle it around him, and then stomp it to the floor.

I coast by the finish, and wait for him to come by so I can return and get the $$, pick up my buddy who was the flagger, and leave.

I am looking for him to come by, and all I see is sparks and a light to my left.

I haul *** back to the finish line, the Mustang is smoking in the middle of the parking lot, no one is hurt, and the driver (Brian) is going ballistic.
I pick up two of my friends and Mustang boy, haul *** back down and pick up the starter, and the $$, and haul *** to a Taco Bueno.

We sit in the parking lot (half mile away) watching police on their way to the scene, helicopters and all.

No one got hurt, but it turns out Brian had flipped the Mustang, and landed in the parking lot. broke the suspension, oil pan, caused an oil/gas fire, and didn't kill anyone. Called the car in stolen ASAP.

After that we started racing at the drag strip. $5.00 somehow seemed worth it.
BTW Dart ran 12.50's at 119. Maverick ran 11.00's at 140.

Is street racing a stupid idea?
    Yes,
    Will it stop?
    No

If your gonna do it, be smart about where you do it. Don't kill anyone, and I won't tell.
