Much Confusion surrounds all the different Flathead Bells, starter plates and oil pans. Over the last few month's, V8Bob and myself have been working on compiling a downloadable pdf that will shed the light on what bellls work with what starter plates and oilpans. The pdf version was released yesterday and is available for download at the msn Flathead Forum now. I would appreciate if members would leave a thank you to V8Bob when they down load the pdf from the link. Follow this link to the msn Flathead Forum and then right mouse click on the file's Link to download directly to your hard drive. Please remember to think of V8Bob and all of the hard work that he did in getting this project off the ground...This would not have been possible without his expertise.... http://groups.msn.com/FordFlathead19...23150064397078 The file will soon be moved over to the Flathead Tecno-Site as soon as Bill B catches up with the mantainance on the MSN Flathead Forum. Hope this helps... moe<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
An excellent article - let us know when it gets to its final destination in the techno pages. We can link to it in the Tech Archives here too.
Thanks guys, I will keep you posted so that a link can be established from the HAMBs tech archives. moe

How do we id year and application and that sort of thing? Just by iding the bell we have and comparing we have and then using the number attached to get info?
""How do we identify year and application and that sort of thing? Just by identifying the bellhousing we have and then using the number attached to get info"" This was not meant to be a 'What's Best' or a 'how to' guide, as there's nothing stopping you from using your choice of flathead bell and your choice of shaft or fork style clutch with your favourite ******. They all bolt up to the Block via the same mounting bolts so the skies the limits as to what you have in your parts pile.. The basic info is all available from the pop up windows indicated by the ? and 'note' marks. Grab your spare bellhousing(s) and zip thru the pics. It's a little intimidating at first but Everything you need to id every flathead bell/plate is at your finger tips. The do***ent is more a guide as to what plates work with what bells/pans. Many people have found out the hard way that their starter hangs/drags/grinds or doesn't engage because they have the wrong bell and plate combo. The guide was really to help us all figure out which plate goes with which bell before we ***embled our drive trains... As such, the bells are all pictured with there proper plate. Basic concept is to use what you have as a matched set and save yourself the grief of pulling a trans to change the bell that you don't have the starter plate for.... If you can id the belll, you should be able to find a clutch et el for the corresponding year of the bell etc. The do***ent should allow you to print the pictures and text so it should be easy to make yourself a handy booklet to take to the swap meet.... There are so many bells and plates at the swaps but they are often seperated or the wrong set so this should allow you to pic and choose if you have to. To sum it all up, Flathead bells fit flathead blocks, use what you have but use the appropriate cover plate and or oil pan as a set..
