I attacked the 1st of the rims for my Plymouth yesterday, took it over to Yorgatrons & applied a liberal coating of JASCO PAINT & EPOXY REMOVER....... Damm, it works fast....2 light coats & a quick scrub & a rinse later we had 44 years worth of paint gone!! After letting it dry thoroughly, I sprayed the rear of it with RUSTOLEUM FLAT BLACK & the front with RUSTOLEUM WHITE PRIMER.... Next came several coats of RUSTOLEUM METALLIC FLAT SILVER Followed by several coats of RUSTOLEUM SATIN BLUE Yeah, I know...It looks purple, but these were taken when it was still wet...and I used my camera phone!! Followed the same procedure on the very rusty hubcap.... Here it is following primer... And after applying about 6 coats of the METALLIC SILVER, it looked pretty damm good to me, when sitting alongside the freshly painted rim.... And here's the final deal, all together, the silver base on the blue gives a slight flake effect, which is cool....and not immediately obvious in the crappy camera phone pic's!! Total outlay....about $15.00 1 down....4 to go.....Gonna run these with 175/70r13 skinny whitewalls. Big thanks to George for the use of the 'spray booth' and constant supply of coffee
Looks good. One thing about that wheel, with all that Rustoleum, it shouldn't rust now. You could be starting a new style---the satin finish wheel cover. Would be a way to use old caps that have a bad finish, but are straight otherwise. Taking that a step farther, the cap could be color keyed to the car.
Hahaha, its pretty much a guarantee that it will NEVER rust again!! I was thinking of clear coating it, but I'm gonna leave it for now, see how it holds up. That was probably the best cap of the 7 or so I got with the car, will have to see how the others turn out... We were shooting for some kinda "Moon" hubcap look...or similar...I think it looks pretty good, and its probably the 1st thing I've ever painted successfully!!
OK..... Here's a close look at the contrast in color, taken in the sun, rather than on the carpet!! Now, where to find cheap (but not too cheap & nasty) tires with skinny whitewalls....
Looking good Dave At this rate, you will be driving the thing soon, LOL. North Hants huh, Kev i Reckon he should be able to get them cheaper over there, dont you? Gunna be shipping the 63 soon.. This week i hope. Catch you soon. Roland
Flathead, The wheels and caps are looking good my friend. Its real nice what a little paint can do to old cruising meterial. Cruiser 49
I tried to do that kinda thing, but have the painting talent of a ham fisted, blind chimpanzee.... Love the look Skratch
