Pic is still huge, BUT ford open trans like that is 1946~1953 1/2 ton truck.

Made 2 versions i know of, one useing early style gears & you can convert back to closed drive.

One with a later style gear and clsed stuff wont work on.

the 81A top may be the wrong one, but i cant tell from the pics
    CUS ITS TO BIG :D

I have a hunch its from an F~1 Ford truck

99C-670940 is the Vin # for the truck. I think you are looking at a tranny that was in one of the first post war 1945 trucks. The 99 suggests that it is bolted to the V8 and the C is that it was a 1/2 ton. This is the light duty 3 spd that ford put in the 1/2 tons beteen 42 and 50. The shifter housing is correct for the newer gear set.

It is the tranny I am looking for -- how much do you want for it?

Actually, I think it was in '39 that Ford changed to the new style gears and because ford didn't throw things away you could find the old gears in the Standards for that year and maybe '40. As far as I know none of the new gears work with the old so you have to use either new or old gears in these boxes. The 81A shifter housing mated to the newer wider syncro gear so if you changed to the older gears you would need the older shifer housing also. I think if you want the closed drive with the newer gears all you have to do is swap in the newer car output shaft and bearing retainer (possible throw in the low/reverse slider since there may have been slightly different twists on the output shaft splines). The car still had the closed drive until '48. The box had the side shifter but shared the gears with this light duty truck 3spd.

We tried to put much of the basic trans ID information up on our website for this very purpose. Here is that link:
    http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_transID_3speed.htm

Just be sure to check the gears for early type or late type. Also, check the large (front) shifter fork to make sure it is the early (2-7/8") or late (3") type in width between the fork tips. The wide one is actually 2.97" but who's counting. If you want LOTS more information on these trannies, check out our book: INS AND OUTS OF EARLY FORD TRANSMISSIONS.

VanPelts got a great book on Flathead Ford tranys, refer to it all the time in the shop. This is most likely a Pickup trans 42-7,. Straight lever, big detent screws. open drive line , would probably be a good bet that it has the later style gear set. Great tranny for flathead conversion open drive line to modern rear.
