I can't seem to find an inexpensive universal fan switch.I've search cole hersee, napa, you name it.I know alot of hot rod suppliers have them.but I guess the cheap-*** in me wants to find one real cheap.now the part I'm looking for is just the small switch that would go in the water jacket.on at 180 degrees.
They do not make a switch that can handle the amperage required for an electric fan. You can buy a complete kit like this at summit. Or you can just buy a cheap switch and a relay to handle the amperage. and create one yourself.
Reids Hotrod shop,in Orange. Right next to C W Moss. Ask for Ashley. He has a couple different types.
I got mine from Carquest, adjustable relay. I don't have to worry about it, it kicks in at 180. If you just want to run a switch, make sure you get a relay
I have been looking for a switch my yyself I,ve got the relay .I just hate to pay $30 bucks for a switch.
most of the parts store ones aren't rated in their books. i've gone to the dealer, napa, pep boys, autozone........and their books only give a part number not what temp they turn on. i don't trust the adjustable ones that get pushed into your radiator fins (i wanted one in the water jacket) so i bought one from hotronics (the whole kit), kinda pricey but never failed in about 7 years. http://www.hotronicsproducts.com/st...id=27&osCsid=93b9d5a596d1933300fdf95d6a798030
appreciate the replies guy's.I should have said that I already have a relay and harness.just need the switch now.I bought a painless kit from jeg's ***uming it was a complete kit.but it didn't come with a switch.well, for the money I paid for that thing,I was a little pissed.so I did some searching at work and came up with a GM relay and wire connector just like the **** I just paid $40 for.and it was free.So now I'm trying to come up with a switch to complete the kit.I'm sure this info will be useful to alot of us on a tight budget.I ran across a switch on ebay that looks alot like the switch their showing in the kit from summit.ebay #130114683404.easiest way to find out is heat up some water and test the switch.find out when it comes on.we'll see how it plays out.I'll post the part# of the GM relay/harness kit on monday, for whoever is interested. Thanks
Geezus...What in the hell ever happened to junk yards( or pre-owned parts oulets, as they call them today) ? Go to your friendly bone-yard and get the switch from an early Ford ******. The yards are full of them. While you're there cannibalize a relay. Now, what was so difficult about that? Everybody gotta buy new, exotic stuff. The junk yard owner has kids to feed too, ya know...Ole Pork
the ****** fan switch is a good idea , a new one is $12 at Napa it goes on at 216 degrees and off at 201...that may be a little higher than what he wants. probabilly should go on at 200 and off at 185?
yeah, truck switches come in different degrees, but w/probably cost more. All of the little cars use basically the same type of switch. Maybe some are a little lower temp range, but modern cars run so damn hot.......Ole Pork
This is just an FYI on how to wire your electric fan to avoid putting too much strain on one relay: http://alanhorvath.com/54chevy/mad_electrical_2.php
Someone get this guy a newly painted soapbox, because what he has just said NEEDS to be heard by a few more folk... Yes, I totally agree... Cosmo
Sorry, but I can't help but chime in here, and will most likely piss off someone, but, if you have an engine worth anything at all what the hell difference does it make if you pay $30 or 3 for a switch that will give you funtion and piece of mind? If your budget is that tight, I might suggest shutting up shop until your finances are better. Nuff said, the ****ster
for the time it takes to go to the yard, find a car, pull the switch, take it home, test it to find out IF it's the correct temp and hopfully it works. it's cheaper to have one delivered to your door that you already know what temp it is. not to mention if the used switch (which i would'nt reccomend) fails earliy and you start the process over again. not knocking junkyards but i wouldn't get a used switch or relay they're too important.
so you don't smoke your switch, the fans pull a LOT of amps and could cause a big arc (which could = big fire under dash).
I used a Camaro sensor which turns the fans on a 180 . Just went out to the car to see if it has any markings but all I can tell you is that it has a black top and cost me about £20 so would probably be about $20. Might consider using a Hotronics set up? Use one on my truck and it works like a charm, even keep the fans running after the engine is turned off until it gets down to temprature. P.
I agree with you on that 1oldtimer.the thing is I like being able to go a auto part store and buy a part.that's the reason I'd like to find an OEM part.which I'm sure I will.it's cool that everybody gives their opinion and shares their knowledge.as long as it's productive,it's useful.
I have a built 350 in my 68 camaro (well low 12's built anyway) and I have one of the ones that pushes the temp sensor through the fins in the radiator, with the adjustable temperature relay box. I have daily driven it alot, and on 100 degree days, for the past 5 years and it works awesome. You can fine tune it to come on exactly when you want, and it comes with a couple extra pigtail wires from the relay box so you can just flip a switch and it will turn the fans on. So if your in line at a drag strip and you want it extra cool, you can hit the switch. Just my experience...
There ya go. New, inexpensive, and the temp. you're lookin' for. Add a relay, switch, both, or whatever, and you're in business. Good discussion on a couple of different ways to go. All usable, but each a little different. That's what makes HAMB so great...Ole Pork
i would rather go to the parts store also (way easier and less time) but i have yet to find a person (around my area) that can give me the temp settings and not just a part number. i course i have'nt looked in a while, but i'm going to have to start looking again, so everyone post your temps and applications (of the switch).
