Im prolly buying a chopped 54 merc and right now it has plexi gl*** windshield in it and I plan on driving the car daily, Im wondering If I can use wipers on it with out scratching the **** out of it. IF not that could I at least rain x on it? or will it haze it up.

I plan on having a gl*** one cut for it, but might take time finding one and having it cut to fit, I know the guy and he had one cut to fit but when he was putting it in I think he dropped it or something

    thanks

The answers are not the ones you want to hear about this situation. Plexigl*** will weather and scratch. It is undoubtably illegal because of the shattering qualities. All cars are required by law to have shatteerproof gl***. This is a no win situation and that's a fact.

Plexiglas scratches pretty easily...I have on in my roadster and it's marred up from just using a clean, soft towel.

Maybe you have a Lexan windshield. They don't shatter and are used in aircraft. Lexan with MarGard is a little harder to scratch

The only chopped cars I have ever seen with Plexiglas windshields are the ones that screwed the top so a safety gl*** windshield will never fit without cracking from stress. You may be buying something you can never make legal. If its got plexiglas it better be cheap.

I also purchased a car with a plexigl*** windsheild. I have just replaced it with safety gl***. The plexi was terrible! I couldn't even clean the bugs off, because it would leave scrathes. Forget about using a wiper.

    Lexan scratches just as easy.

What ever it is do not use a gl*** cleaner on it, it will haze real quick. Not sure if Rain-X will do that, but the products with ammonia will cause a lot of damage and will eventually cause crazing.

  11. 54 merc is a simple windshield to cut. make sure that it was welded proper. I have seen some simple windshield keep stress cracking from body flexing.

I have a 60 olds with lexan windshield that will be replaced before I take out again. Its those lite scratchs that reflect light thats the killer. I had to wear sungl***es even at night to reduce the glade it had.
Using wipers will really scratch it up as they will have some dust and sand on them from the wind when its dry and once you go to use them when rain starts you'll just gouge the windshield with it.
I would replace with gl*** asap

How about if you tell him you'll buy the car if he puts a real windshield in it. If that queers the deal you just saved your self a REAL headache. No gl***, no deal.

Percy's Speedgl*** makes Lexan that has a coating on it for drag cars. You can take steel wool to it and not scratch it. I still recommend making it legal with safety gl*** though.

The whole thing of only using a NOS windshield is what worries me.
I have never heard that unless someone was trying to save a few bucks but not because its thicker, that sounds like stress problems to me and that he has tried a new one and went with lexan.

I used plexi in a couple cars I chopped cuz at the time I couldnt get new gl*** and/or didnt know how to cut it and the guy that said he could told me he'd go thru 3-4 new windshields before he could cut one without cracking it and i believed it was almost impossible to have a affordable chopped gl*** windshield. so I rolled with plexi....... till new windshields have become more avail. under $200 and I could easily cut one myself.

My experience has been that original windshields are more brittle than new ones. I have damaged more than old one in the last 35 years trying to put it back in the car.

  24. I called them and they sent me a sample. It really works, and I rubbed harder than a soft rubber windsheild wiper. 1-888-737-2970

I put lemon furniture polish on our loging skidders winschilds and it keep the dust off and takes the scraches out hard to bleave but it works.AS for plx. windschild i would change it out fast ,if it is too thin it will bend and come back in you face not good any you put it. alley
