Stick.....sounds like my ex had it up her kazoo....
It might be anything from the clear they used to float the flake to the final protective layer to a bad or cheap mixture of resins or urethanes.....some resins/clears begin to break down quickly and smell like a bus station terminal or monkey house....
Try a light wash-off with warm soapy water or spray cleaner, and keep moisture from collecting in your fastener or threads to avoid later rust ...
Where is the product from, if I might ask?

I've heard that is a problem with old plastic/bakelite. Maybe you could clear coat it, or dip it in fresh resin to seal in the stink

Did you buy it from Rob Fortier? He used to have the matching steering wheel. ;) Clear spray paint might seal in the stink?

That might help....all resins break and shrink eventually, releasing oils....but for the time being it could solve your problem......

    good luck.....

I recall drafting squares and triangles from middle school shop cl*** that stunk REALLY bad and the teacher told us that it was a soybean or corn based plastic (I can't remember which anymore) that was used...I bought a pair of old safety gl***es (with the mesh side shields) off of e-bay and they stink like those old drafting tools...I have no idea how to stop it though...

I got a NOS bubble shield for my helmet a while back that smelled like a taco bell fart. I tried a bunch of stuff, My wife put rain x and anti fog on it and put it in a closet and the smell was gone in a couple of days. It is fine now, but I keep putting the rainx on to try to keep it that way.

If its bakelite, and it smells wierd, that means its starting to deteriorate. One of my ex chicks used to collect bakelight bracelets and I remember that If one is like that it can spread to other bakelite stuff so she would have to get rid of it.
    maybe clear coat ?

I thought there was a similar thread about steering wheels awhile back, but I can't find it. I wish I could, though, the wheel in our olds smells rotten...

  17. That happens to a lot of old screwdriver handles.Even the newer Craftsmans tend to yellow and stink up your toolbox so it just smells like old box.

Well that explains the nasty in my toolbox. Heck I pulled out the drawer liners, washed out the box, dried it, everything was fine. Put the tools back in, one day later, stinko city!
I used 3M adhesive remover on my old El Camino wheel. It took a little while but removed all the sticky and with it the stinky! AS long as I had the truck it never oozed again.

The clear plastic handles of Sears Craftsman screwdrivers were notorious for having an AWFUL smell when new, at least they did 20 years ago. If you got the deluxe ***ortment, they came sealed in (non-smelly) plastic so you didn't know until you opened it.

The clear shift knob is probably made of similar material. Don't worry, the smell will be mostly gone after 20 years.

N-C-60 typing at the same time I was!? Must be an NY Sears thing.

Old nitrocelouse film stock will "vinegar out" and stink like this. I had to have a film restoration place wash some old 8 mm film I had to stop it from rotting away. Be careful what you wipe it down with since it's already deteriorating, as it will dry out and crumble into dust. Clean it super clean with scotch bright and soapy water, blow it dry and seal it with clear urethane to keep the air off it and it should be ok.
