A little progress on my 1956 f100

    I do not remeber the guys screen name, but I bought this truck from a nice guy named Jimmy. About a year ago I had posted a wanted ad looking for a bench seat for my other 1956 f100. Jimmy hooked me up with the seat from this truck. When I picked up the seat Jimmy said he would not be using the running gear, I told him to call me when he got it out. Well as it worked out I got a call back in January. We made a deal, and I trailed the whole truck home from Georgia.

    When I got it home I had just started to build my new shop. I have not had much time to work on any of my other projects. When we got the new shop in the dry I thought if I put the f100 inside, maybe I would be able to work on it. If the new shop was closer to my house and old shop I would not have done it, but it is 60miles away.

    I like to see fast progress, but as I get older I understand that steady progress is good too. I started out by having a set of wheels powdercoated, and bought some cheap new tires. I got it up on jack stands and pulled the brakes. Found everything for the rear brakes at Carquest(it is a 1967-1972 f100 9" axle). So I rebuilt the rear drums complete. The front drum brakes will work nice on the girlfrineds Model A, so I ordered a disk conversion for the f100. Went with a under floor,dual circut mastercylinder. I plumbed the lines in a few hours. I pulled the gauge cluster so I could refurbish it at my home shop. Used all new electric gauges in the stock cluster.

    I rebuilt the drive shaft and made a new carrier bearing support. I found a nice 67-72 f100 steering column to replace the worn out one that was in the truck. I am still trying to figure out what kind of steering box is in the truck. It is a manual box, mounted in the stock location, but it is not stock. The steering box has splines on the input shaft, but it is not a Toyota manual box because it has a pinch bolt style pitman arm.

    The front suspension was fun. I reversed the main leaf eyes, installed poly ****tons, and removed 2 leafs. While the axle was out I drilled it, installed new kingpins, replaced the tierod/ends, and painted it. I am not sure if it will be too low or not. Got some new ubolts, spring eye bushings/pins, and put it all back together.

    I picked up a nice 390fe from Unclescooby(and his wonderful family). The heads are at the machine shop getting a little port work, while I detail the short block. It will replace the tired 360 that is in the truck now.

    I have tons of other parts for this truck. I will have to add some pics of some of the other work that has been done. It is all just little projects that have been done 1-2hours at a time, at most 1-2days a week. My goal was to get excited about building my new shop. It worked. I have a lot of auto building experience, but no construction background. I look forward to the time I spend working on the shop. I know that if I work real hard on the building I can spend a hour or two with the truck. I was at the point that I was not sure why I was building the shop in the first place.

    Back to the truck. I guess when it is done the uninformed will say I have a cool "ratrod" truck. I am not doing any work that does not make the truck go fast, stop fast, or handle better. It will be driven in all of its multi color glory. It will be painted when I get tired of driving the wheels off of it.

    Dude you rock, I am doing the same with my 55? Are you coming to the F100 this weekend there in Asheville area? I am leaving out in the morning heading that way

    This weekend is going to be spent insulating the shop. Bigpappab, and my self will be trying to get it finished in 3days(11500sqft of insulation). I have missed out on alot this year. Made the HAMB drags and the spring auto fair. Next year will be different.

    IF you change your mind and can get away the F100 is down in Lake Lure/Chimney Rock at the Geneva Riverside Motel. Should be about 50-75 F100's there.

    Well I had been busy with the new shop, relationships falling apart and all the other problems of life. Almost got the truck finished for the f100 super nationals. The transmission had a few small issues after coming back from the trans shop. It will be the new daily driver in the next few weeks. Pulling the exhaust back out to get it coated, dropping the front axle for a little lower ride height, rerun the rear brake lines with it on the lift, just small details.

    The 390 runs great. It will be a fun ride for the summer. May have to put a/c in for the Hamb drags. It gets hot in Joplin.

    I will add some more pics of it outside. It is almost 100% Ford, the radiator overflow bottle is from a Toyota Land Cruiser, and the steering box is a dodge d100 manual. It is 100% new or rebuilt from front to back, but I forgot to paint it.

    Damn you even have all the gauges in the dash instead of the idiot lights. You wouldn't happen to have any extra volt and oil gauges?

    I have the stock ones I took out. I used the gauges that Mid-fifty sells . They replace the factory 4 gauges with new faces/senders. It was easy to do. I wrote all the wiring diagrams on the back side of the gauge cluster to make future electrical work easy for myself.

    Looks good! Nothing beats a nice big shop to work in either! :)

    Cool start, keep us posted.
    I like the guages instead of the lights too.
