That was my Grandads first car, I think he said he paid 7 bucks for it. Sorry no pics, and thats weird, cause he takes pics of everything. He's in his 90's, has one eye,(lost it like in a Christmas story, age 9)and used to fly planes, Thanks VT, I'm gonna call him this morning.
i have no gpaw to call and no cool pix of his car... that sux... you should be happy you got a picture of him with a car like that. I miss me gpaw and I am drunk. bp
Thanks for the cool pic! I have one of my granpa (90yrs) wrenching on a German Ford Flathead V8 in the desert near Tripolis around 1942/43 or so.In this pic they ´re fabricating a "new " oil pan from scratch, because the old one had been ripped off by a rock. Sorry I don´t have a scanner. It feels good to see pics like that!
I posted this pic with my intro a while back, but it fits. I never met him. He died in Vietnam. I'm told he loved racing. VW racing in Africa
I got this pic sometime in the 80's when my father was helping an old friend of his clean out his basement. I snagged it cause I thought it was a cool picture.
Up here in New England we have an 80 year old genlteman who drives a 1917 Star to all the local car shows and parades. He's a real character and loves to fill the car with young babes. He dresses in a silk shirt, string tie, cowboy boots and hat and has a story for everyone. Last year he trailered it to Florida and drove it around down there for the winter. We call him "the Mayor of Richmond" because he always acts like he's running for office. Wish I had a picture to share.
I've got a copy of a picture of my grandfather on a 30's (RL maybe?) Flathead Harley taken around or before WW2...I think it's really cool. He once told me he rode an earlier Harley with one of his brothers and a friend all the way to Mexico from Central Texas (Waco area). That's three young guys on one Harley on the questionable roads back then...and a loooonnngg trip. They had less than $10 combined when they left, and still had money when they got back. He said they slept in watermelon patches and ate watermelons to save money. Wish he was still around....
That's awesome... I can totally relate to your feelings towards that photo... I have been working on a Power Point presentation for my grandfathers service (this coming Monday) and scanning in a bunch of old pic's. It is hard at times to look at the pic's when I was just holding his hand a little over a week ago. I am glad that we have these stories and memories.... Family and Friends is all that matters in this world! HC
By the way, VT...that picture rocks. And that had to be one bad-ass dog for him to let it ride on the hood.
wow VonTingler, that photo speaks volumes, real America right there. my family and my wife's family were from rural America too, not quite as old and not a lot of car in it but here's my wife in her mother's arms,
Very nice VT and 60's. Here are couple family photos of my great uncle stock car races in central ILL. Here also ran a garage in Peoria Ill. in the 40's and 50's called ? I think Kenner Garage. Please don't copy these pic. that are posted - they are my family and for my use only. Thanks VT
Here's my grandpa with either my dad or my uncle. We found the picture after my grandma's death, so we aren't sure. Can anybody tell what kind of car it is by the dash and steering wheel? I'd like to know, it's the only old old car pic I have.
This is a pic of the '34 3 window my dad was building just after he got out of high school. That's my mom in the car. circa 1962.
This is my Great Grandpa, not sure the year but pretty cool. My grandma is really into geneology(sp) she has all kinds of info on our family, she would know the year. That would be funny if he went to Mexico with old man Bass! keven
One of my prized possessions is a pic of my dad taken in 1948 standing next to a 34 5w holding 6 month old ME. Wasnt a hotrod, just all he could afford. In the mid 50s he took it apart used the frame to make a trailer. Wish I knew where the body was dumped.
My Grandpa is an old hot rodder, with a lot of great old old stories. Like the one when he and the other guy in town, both with 36 Fords raced, and my grandpa beat him, then later that night the guy got busted trying to steal another flathead to hop up. He's got some cool old pics too, but sorry, no scanner.
heres a piture of my dad's uncles roadster that they raced on the dirt tracks in PA...they always had 2 cars...one uncle who was the main driver drove #45 and the #44 car was the one that any of the others might drive...my dad recently came across this picture and it's made me think im going to put a 44 on my car instead of the 14 i had...also the kid in the drivers seat is a pretty famous local racer named "mitch smith" he was supposidly about 15 years old when this pictre was taken and grew up with all of my dads aunts and uncles
I love old pics like these guys. The first pic should be my great grandfather kneeling with my mother and her sister in front of the family car. Grandaddy Charlie fought in 2 wars , eloped in a horse and buggy with his 16 year old wife, farmed, traveled with circus and was one hell of a man. He lived to be 97, smoked a pipe, spit tobacco, never drank. The other pic is my granny Essie and her Bo' when they were courtin'. he turned out to be my grandfather. Look in the background and you'll see those fine automobiles. This is a great thread.
52Chief, The car in the photo is a 1941 Chevrolet. It is probably a coupe due to the slo[pe of the "B" pillar.
My grandparents and Mom on right. My granddad worked for Ford for over 30 years. He retired in the early 70's. He would'nt drive anything but Fords. He about had a heart attack in 88 when me and a buddy stopped by in our Chevy trucks.
One more. My Aunt in the 50's. I think that was a 50 or 51 Ford they had and dads 56 Buick in front of that.
