I really want to do a custom grill and cant figure out what to do. I would buy a chrome tube grill in a second if I could find one. Any ideas?

I pic of your grille area would probably help you get some ideas.

How about the old mesh/pull knob treatment? Might set the front end off nicely.

Do a search. There are a few topics on pull knob grills.

Hardware pull knobs (chrome). This can run a little expensive unless you find a place to buy them in bulk. It sounds hokey, but if you find a good example, you'll see how well it can be pulled off. Wire mesh can be inserted into the grill opening (recessed, so as not to be too noticeable) then simply attach the pull knobs through the mess in a pattern

Can you just paint the vertical bars semi-flat black Seems to me that would give you the tube look with very little effort.

Yeah, or go up market, cut down a '59 Chevy grill to fit between the headlights and either fill the space between the turn signals, paint it body color or use the left overs as is.

One of the coolest grille I've ever seen on one of these cars was the one L'il John buterra made for the Nova he built for his son. It was about the year your talking about. If anyone remembers it was on the cover of Hot Rod magazine and the grille was the centerpiece. It was made of aluminum bar stock and tubular spacers.
Look for it, it wasn't hard to build and like most anything L'il does it was unique at the time and didn't break the bank to have one.
