I just put my engine in and have discovered the mechanical fuel pump will get smashed if installed so I am considering an electric fuel pump. Anyone with input is much wanted.... Thanks matt
In the past I've run the Carter pump available from Summit racing. I think it cost about $60 bucks. It was a 5- 7 psi pump. It was easy to mount- I mounted mine near the fuel tank on the frame rail and then installed a cheap inline filter before and after it. The whole thing was pretty simple. You will have to wire in in though, obviously so keep that in mind also. The wiring could be as simple as a dash-mounted toggle switch or you could wire it into the ignition switch. Jay
Don't forget an engine failure cut-off circuit and a crash circuit, both to cut power to the pump in case of engine failure or crash.
big ken sorry my posting a new thread has lead you to point out the fact there is a 'search' function but when searching for electric fuel pump a lot more than I was looking for comes up, I will try to post less threads sorry, Matt
Dude, you got a question - ASK. Yeah everything is probably discussed here already and some things discussed more than some would like -that's their problem. So while I agree you could sift through old posts and search for it - maybe you could go to a library - maybe you could Google it - maybe you could do a hundered other ways of getting the information you seek - but were' here to discuss things -ACTIVELY - otherwise this site would DIE. These BS posts telling people to do a search is just that BS. If a topic has been hashed a zillion times and someone is tired of THAT topic - then it's up to THEM to "keep walking". IMHO it's the enthuiasm of "newbie's" that helps fuel this site. Keep asking your questions. Skip the useless posts. Get the info you need. Move on to the next challenge.
Thank you, I am glad you understand and even more so than I did. I really am glad for the posotive input. You have no idea how many times I have listened to a buddy of mine go on about how on the message board he is a member of they really jump on each other about repeating and stuff, I am glad you wrote what you did makes me want to stay on here. Thanks Matt
Regardless of electric fuel pump choice, since you'll be running it at the rear of the car you need to make sure voltage is adequate. A relay close to the pump, fed with a 10 gage supply wire and controlled with a 14 gage wire from an ignition switch controlled source is the way to go. 14 gage from relay to pump works fine and you'll have full battery voltage at the pump. Once you wire in an oil pressure safety switch, a crash switch etc. the voltage will be too low for the pump. It'll work ok, but run overly warm and it's life will be considerably shortened. Only took me one burned up Holley red pump to figure that one out....
Neither Mechanical nor electric pumps are fool proof. Problems on out of town trips taught me to carry a spare.
Maybe you should get your *** up from in front of the computer and go get to it! Just kidding Matt the car looks great im proud of ya brother keep up the good work. I will try to get my *** in gear and get mine fix. I just got alot of **** on my plate. Later, TJ
Hello Matt...I fully endorse two things, 1st..the impact switch to shut down your fuel pump in case of accident or whatever (New from Ron Francis or wrecking yard)..2nd..Carter, pump excellent. Duane
TJ welcome to the best damn message board ever! Thanks much its been some hard work and a long ways to go, and don't worry yours will be up and going very soon. Search for the post about HAMB cars and put yours in there, lots of people here would love it. Any way, good to see you on here. Matt
I run a toggle switch to the relay (ground) and put the switch at the bottom of the dash. This way just in case the carb or carbs in my case flood or you want to kill the pump with the key in the on position you can. Or if god forbid you have a fire you can shut the pump off even if you forget to shut the key off! Just my 2 cents.
