Which wheels for my 53 Plymouth street rod??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by xxwelderxx, Jun 4, 2007.

  1. Ok so im looking for some wheels to put on my 53 Plymouth. I have the stock wheels on now, but I was thinking maybe 14x6 in the back and 14x5 in the front. What ya think?

The rear end is gunna stay high while the front is dropping 2 inches.

Any advice woud be greatly appriciated!!

14x5 is probably kind of dinky with that much weight. Picture the car at 50 MPH in a hard turn. My definition of a street rod, is the much more polished version of a hot rod. I've always liked just your basic chrome wheels and domed hubcap. Then there's also some nice full diameter hubcaps. I'm thinking mag or billet wheels just won't do anything for that era.

How about some slotted cop-car steelies with dog-dish caps. About 15X6 & 15X7, painted to match ( or off-set )...

  4. yea my wife says keep the stock wheels on there and just paint them red and put a nice set of chrome rings on them.

I was just toying with the idea of a set of Ansen or Hailibrand wheels

  5. Im worried I wont have enough room for 15x6 in the front just do to the wheel well.

14's look weird on a 50's car. my car has 15 and 3" dropped uprights and cut coils. and like 5" blocks in the back. my driveline does rub but that is it.

I'm pretty sure your stock wheels are like 15x6", I wouldn't go down to 14s if I were you. Do you have disc brakes on the front? If so, any clearance issues with the calipers and the original wheels?

  8. Go 15" and lower the whole thing down as far as you can. Also the back should be lower than the front with wide whites. Ya gotta go kustom please! Rags

  9. So I jacked up the back of the car today to see what my car would look like... didnt look all that great with the *** in the air.

So drop the front 2 inches and the rear 4 inches? I guess I could run the exhaust out the sides.

I guess this will save me money on wheels then. :D

I dont think Im gunna use skirts cause that will just hide the beautiful wide whites and wire caps.

Saw these on a 53 Plymouth. They are Dodge Rally wheels. The guy has all four with center caps. What ya think?

Run your stock wheels and throw on some spider caps and beauty rings. You'll thank me later. In-expensive too. KNUX!

Teenagers (like me) were actually driving old cheap cars like 53 Plymouths to school when those cars were 10-20 years old. My first car was a 53 Plymouth back in 68 - 69. To me, they always look best when dressed in the wheels from that point in time.

Mine had a set of 15" Torque Thrusts with 70 series Goodyear Polyglas RWL tires. The damn wheels and tires were worth more than the rest of the car! But before I had the bucks to buy those, the wheels were black 15" Ford steel rims from a Galaxie (I think) with black sidewall tires with baby moons. There was a 54 Plymouth at my high school with chrome reverse wheels. I remember thinking that the current 69-70 Road Runner or GTX wheels would have looked nice.

  14. thanks for all the information and feedback!!!

  15. i believe your question has a awkward answer
your 53 plymouth is not a street rod ... until they rewrite the rules

now the wheels for your car are a matter of choice change them as you see fit ...dress shoes knock around shoes and runners ... mix and match
kinda like gettin a new car when the ashtray is filled..change as often as your shorts i hope i am not being too personal
i like 80's squad wheels with older dog dish or stockers and w/w... the soninlaw runs chromies on his 50 ragtop cuz nothing else fits in the rear cuz of the lowering job

    good luck

Those Mopars in your pic would look a bit like the old "artillary" rims of the thirties but for the trim rings and the center cap. How about the bare rim, painted a cool color with stainless acorn nuts a spider center?

For my Dodge, I'm using a chevy disc conversion up front and redrilled drums in back. I 'm bead blasting Camaro IROC 15 x 6 alloys and using big and littles in a black wall. No pics. Rims are still on the carport.
