Rust removal???? Learn me...........

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Human Fly, Jun 5, 2007.

  1. I have a body that been stripped and left to the elements for a while. so it has surface rust all over, in and out.

What are some of your techniques for rust removal.
Ive called the local plastic bead blaster, he said you cant blast it b/c the surface rust is too soft and the beads just bounce off.......

    Any tips or tricks.

find another blaster. gl*** bead, or sand... maybe plastic won't work?? don't know

inside there is good old por15. outside.. depending on how bad it is there is media blasting with a competent blaster, and possibly sanding, depending on the extent of the rust. if you sand watch the heat or you could warp it

Plastic won't do it, not aggressive enough. Sand will warp flat panels. Gl*** bead, gl*** slag (black beauty), crushed gl***, alum oxide will work, but are expensive, if you can't recycle the media.
There are acid, and alkyline dips you can go to (pro shops). Or DYI with various liquid rust removers, do a search (Safest Rust Remover, Oxysolve, etc.)
Or try the old "sand the **** out of it", and then use a liquid to get the rust out of the pit even regular metalprep is good for this.
It aint going to be easy, fast, or clean, doing it yourself. And be prepared for surprises!

I like these, but if the area's big enough it could take a lot of time and money...

There are blasting media such as starblast and other fine abrasives that can white blast older sheet metal (19 ga. or thicker... preferrably with stamped reveals or compound curves) if the blaster doing the work has the right touch.

Soda will not work. Soda isn't an abrasive and can't even break the "surface tension" of the substrate. Rust is down in the substrate, so you've got to take away metal to clean it out... or chemically convert/encapsulate it. Soda would clean up super light surface rust or rust stained primer and paint.

  9. RMT: do you have to wash the body after you put this stuff on for a while, please excuse my ingnorance as i have never used anything like that bofore.

Redneck: i have thought about those, but it would be **** for the little ****ty corners and stuff.

Im interested to know more about rust converters...........anyone.
