SwitchBlade, did you use a black basecoat to assure complete coverage?

Nope, used Toreador Red base on the 53, and silver base on the roof of the 64. The shoebox did use a black base I believe.

Here are a couple of the roof of my '57 Ranchero. Was my first flake job and turned out looking ok. I used Kustom shop .015 lime green flake over an orion silver base. Then shot HOK organic green candy over that. Killer d did the striping and he really knows how to make a bad painter look good. :D

Hey 'flakers....have a question that maybe some of you could help answer....
When doing a 'flake job with different colored panels and/or fine lines....what's are the basic steps?
Do ya lay down the base, then the 'flake, clear it, sand it smooth.....then lay out your masking???? Do ya use a basecoat/clearcoat, then 'flake....or 'flake right on the base?
Some of these 'flake jobs in multicolors and panels with lace have gotta have alot of paint on 'em (mils).....
The next car I build will get some 'flake.....and I'm going need all the help I can find.....he he.....:D

The cars posted above are absolutely stunning!

Not quite sure what you want to do, but for lace / panel paint jobs you spray a metallic base, mainly either gold or silver, flake it with either gold or silver flake, clear so the flake is covered and smooth, let it cure and completely dry, then wetsand, mask, and spray candy over it in whatever pattern you want. If you don't let the clear dry, it will react with the candy and make your paintjob wrinkle, and if you don't cover the flake with enough clear and sand it down smooth, you can't mask it off well, and the candy will bleed through. Hope this helps.

Thanks fellas. Donnie did the flake job. He could answer these questions better than I could, but I'll give it a shot.

It is colored flake. I don't remember what the exact color is called. I think the basecoat was a similar color to the flake itself(light mintish blue, almost seafoam). The flake is so heavy, you can't really see the basecoat. The fogged edges are a custom candy that Donnie made(candy Turquois tinted with a little Blue I think). The pinstripe in the fog was made with a tape line, so its the flake color.

Here's a closeup "macro" shot with my digital.
