I just saw a carb setup on a boss mustang. It was a four barrel on an aftermarket manifold ( maybe factory) that had four barrels IN A ROW! There was no progressive linkage and four accelerator pumps. What the hell is that? and how rare is it?
Thanks, squirrel. I havent been called a "youngster" in a lot of years. I aint young, but I am dumb and proud of it!
After a rule change that said "No Holleys" in stock cl*** I put an AFB on my son's dirt tracker. This was 20 years ago and some of the guys didn't know what it was either.
I figured either you were too young, or not deeply into cars at the time....Ford made a lot of very neat performance stuff in the 60s. Most of it is very hard to find these days. SOHC 427s, side oilers, shotgun motors, those inline carbs, etc.
Seems like Autolite/Ford made them during the factory trans-am days. They had single and duel inline manifolds. The twins were called "Cross Boss". I bought a bunch of parts from a local Ford racer back in the mid-70's and got some of that stuff along with some Bud Moore manifolds, Boss blocks ,and heads. Sold the stuff at a Shelby meet.Thought I made big money-wish I had em now.
I think you've seen the inline Autolite 4 bbl. They were used in TransAm racing and I've seen some on drag cars. They made manifolds to run 1 and 2 carb setups. Barry Grant is starting to manufacture a similar carb. Larry T
Those cross bosses are super cool. I'm trying to work out a getto version putting together pair of two barrels inline on an lower efi intake. I planning on making a single throttle shaft on the lathe. Should be a mite cheaper.
It's an Autolite inline 4 barrel, 850 or 1400 cfm . It was made for Trans-AM racing rules that specified a single 4 barrel. Many of the parts like accelerator pumps, jets etc are production autolite parts. The matching intake is known as a "Cross Boss". The top is removeable, so it's possible to fabricate a cover to mount 2 carbs for individual runner induction. It was for racing only, so is quite rare. http://www.mustangandfords.com/mufp_0609_1967_shelby_mustang_gt350/cross_boss_intake.html
As mentioned, Barry Grant is building something like it. Pretty cool. http://www.barrygrant.com/news/articles/products/product_022.aspx
