Yet another tach question. I am still looking for a vintage Sun tachometer for my '65 Belvedere "Super Stock" wagon. I want something that is period-correct. It doesn't have to necessarily be a tach that was available in 1965, but something that would have been used in the mid to late '60s in general. I would actually prefer to use a tachometer that does not require a transmitter (due to the added cost of finding a good working transmitter).

I have located a nice 8-cyl 8000 rpm tach, model number 897-691 (like the one pictured). Can anyone tell me which years this particular tach was first used?

    Thanks again.

I have one of those on my coupe. Had it since the early 70s. Not sure how much earlier they were available.

That's the same exact tach I have in my truck. Although I don't know the vintage... I guess I just wanted to share...

I guess I can't go wrong with it. It looks (from the Hot Rod pictures) very much like the tachs from the mid to late '60s. Even if it is from the early 70's most people won't know the difference. My car is not 100% correct anyways...

My 65 1/2 Weiand catalog lists the Sun Super Tach as NEW and the pic does not have that logo "Sun Super Tach" on the face of it. Also the revs are listed in hundreds and Model Numbers are SST-50,60 or 70 depending on the 5000, 6000 or 7000 rev range which you want.By the look of the advert from HRM the one you have may have been a slightly later updated model. Does it require a transmitter?
All the ones listed in my catalog needed a transmitter with the exception of the Model FZ which was not a full sweep but did incorporate the sending unit in the head.
Hope this helps. BTW the tach was $38 and the transmitter was $22 in 1965 1/2!!! The FZ model with inbuilt transmitter was $48.

See my post under search word “tach”. Mine maybe older than what you are looking for. It’s a Sun RC85 I think.

I use Sun Super Tachs ll's on all my old cars. You'd be surprised how many are on eBay for auction. Search Sun Tach. Every now and then NOS units keep popping up.

Had an SST-802, looks very similar, in late '60's.
