I have some ABS plastic panels that have some small holes and scratches in 'em. What is the best method for filling the holes? Epoxy?? I will be prepping it for paint and shooting it candy red...... Also, will be using HOK base. Now I have a gallon of Valspar clear from a past project and am thinking of using it. I am thinking it'lll be fine since Valspar makes HOK? Thanks for any help!
I have several panels made of ABS Plastic.....and I have had to repair some of them. You can weld the cracks/holes with a plastic welder then you can paint the plastic with epoxy primer.... then use bondo over the epoxy primer. The primer bonds to the plastic and the bondo bonds to the primer. I have several 8 year old patch jobs that have held up good.
You can plastic weld them, but if you don't have the welder, any autobody shop should be able to supply you with a 2 part urethane mix that works on ABS. If the hole is pretty big, you can back it up with fiberglass cloth with the urethane pushed into it. I also like to use a flexible filler to finish it off. Evercoat makes it. Good insurance using epoxy to provide a bonded surface for the filler, as Gary said.
MUCH appreciated guys! .....I don't have the welder, so I'll see what the Autobody supply house has.... The holes are small...@ 1/8" and less.....scratches are not very deep either...
Just go to lowes , menards , your local hardware and get some abs cement Tape the back side of the holes after cleaning them with the abs primer and fill em with the cement. Let it dry ofr a couple days then sand it smooth. get the black cement thats the best. I use it with abs for door panels and interior panels and you can actually glue 2 panels together. Better to use a pice for a backer behind the joint but it works great Dave
