The 460 in the Hudson is hooked up to 2.5" straight pipes.

I've driven it around through town a bit, and it is obnoxiously loud...it doesn't sound good, it sounds broken...

So, I'm taking it in for mufflers tomorrow....

I was thinking 30" gl***packs. Does that sound like a decent size for a motor this big?

    Any other suggestions?

i have 26" gl*** packs on a 350 and its real quite but sounds good when im into it. id say 30's should do ya just right. But i all so have 2" off the headers then 2.5" from mufflers back. so i dont know if the size will make much of a deal.

For those who like the Straight pipe crackle but not the high decibels...you might want to try any size gl***packs installed backwards...they still muffle but not as much....I used 18 inchers on my T-birds 390 and I love it...deep low tone while runnin...but Crackles like hell when I wanna show off.
Did it on my brother 56 chevy lakes pipes too.

Personally I love the Flowmaster on my 4.3litre Chevy truck...sounds Baja and makes alarms go off...but I think they sound wack on cl***ic cars that aren't "Muscle" cars.

distance from the motor really affects tone and volume too....it's all bout how you want your car too sound. Have fun!

No flowmasters. I would put a fart can on before Flowmasters...

This is a 49 hudson, not a Torino....

Thanks for the replies...I guess I'll go with 30" gl***packs and see how it sounds...

I run 38" pacs on my Olds. It has that low, mean grumble that a custom should. And gl***pacs wear real quickly, so it'll get louder in no time.

    Flowmasters are musclecar muffs.

I don't understand why 29 a freak wants to piss people off. I always hung around folks that you DO NOT want to piss off. To each his own, I guess…

First post here so pardon me if i mess it up :) Dirtybird hit it on the head the closer to the motor the more crack and the longer the tail pipe the deeper the tone you will get as a general rule. I have walker continental gl*** packs on my 57 and 39 with virtually identical motors and they sound quite different with the longer tail pipes the 57 has it barks a real deep loud drone compared to the 39 that cracks and sets off every car alarm on the street :D . Hope this helps .

Hey HEY..watch it there...the correct response would be "This is a 49 Hudson, not a MUSTANG".

Have you thought about these: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=WLK-17713&N=700+115&autoview=sku

    or:

You might be pleasently surprised...mellow for the most part...cheap...not the hollow underwater burbly 'drag boat sound' of the Flowmasters...just a thought...

  18. Flowmasters will make it sound like a throaghty muscle car. You want it to sound like an old kustom you have to go with 22" up to thirty inch for a mellow sound. My fifty Buick is running 24" gl***packs through side lakes pipes and I love the sound when it purrs down the highway. Rags

Three chamber Flowmasters and full tail pipes will sound great. Not loud or adolescent at all. I always thought that a car that is trying to emulate a boat (v-windshield, tail-low stance) should have the healthy burble of one..

I have straight pipes with no mufflers going out to my bellflowers. Maybe you just need longer pipes?

Bieng an exhaust guy, I'm gonna make a suggestion you may want to do some research on.

    Magnaflows.

the basic design is that of a Gl***pack- straight through, perforated core.

    however, the similarities end there.

it is an "oval" bodied muff...kind of like a stocker. they have a nice, ominous rumble. low db, and only "bark" when you get on it. highway driving is very pleasant, with that same low gurgle, but a near complete lack of "slap"- the annoying noise of open pipes.

Seriously, if you were my customer, I would sell you Mag's.

    excellent power,
    great sound,
    affordable,
and they have a lifetime warranty.

they never burn up, and the only difference I have seen years of driving make to them is an increased "richness" of the tone.

they're like an old trumpet. the new stuff just sounds like **** by comparison.

  23. There's a guy in my Dad's imperial club with a built 440 in a '64 300. He runs 3 chamber flowmasters with 18 or 24" gl*** packs for resonators with about 18" of tail pipe behind the gl*** packs. Takes the tinny sound out of the flowmasters, much less back rap than gl*** packs. Really deep sound, too.

I had "jeep" style purple hornies that bolted straight onto the headers of my '57 for 2 days. Thought it would sound cool VERY loud. Bad idea it sounded more like a trash truck. So I put on 2 chamber flowmasters and turn downs before the axle. Now it sounds *****! Of course....I have owned 2 mustangs.:D I thought about Smithys and the like but I think they are too quiet...I guess I'm not that traditional
