not bad at all....had mine on for 4+ years, had cops behind me, no problems... just do it and make sure you have a long straight section of pipe if you decide to change it.
O.K., so I have loud and not bad at all. As an aside also, anyone have a pic how they ran their pipes?
I got straights on my 54, Raps like a mu****er, But i am still able to carry a conversation inside the cab, You gotta have them all the way out the back or else they sound like garbage no bigger than 1 7/8 dia pipe
I had straight pipes on my 52 with a mild v8 and it wasnt bad at all ..... actually about as loud as a race motor with Flows......
Thanks for the sound. (I'll have to check it out after I get home) Thanks for the other replies also.
mine sounds great, not too loud at all, but i also like the way bias ply tires ride. staight pipes all the way back, no mufflers, and it doesn't seem any louder than a v8 with gl***packs.
had straight pipes on my 53,,,,sounded fantastic,,theres no other sound like an inline 6 with straight pipes,,,that car would make me smile every time i downshifted (which i found an excuse to do quite often,,haha)...an old time trick i heard you might want to try if you think its too loud,,,run one straight pipe, and one small gl***pack,,put the gl***pack as close to the engine as possible,,,supposed to sound unreal....
Do it! My '52 has Fenton headers dumping to 1 3/4" to 1 1/2" after the firewall for a couple of feet and finally 1 1/4" from there all the way back. It sounds great, not tooooo loud, just when you're shifting you get a good BRAP! Unless you're getting off of the freeway... then you sound like an 18-wheeler. I am considering doing the one gl*** pack/one straight pipe trick just to see how it sounds... could be cool. newstranger
Traditional lowriders used 1 straight pipe and 1 gl***pack, makes for a great sound, use small pencil tips or turndowns on the end. using a smaller tip gives it a nice little rap and pop.
I've had Straight pipes on my 54 since i got the car on the road (6 years ago) and i wouldn't change a thing about the exhaust. They rap nice too......Does get a lil annoying on long road trips though.
Im running Langdons cast iron headers on my 250 with 2" and a pair of 18" cherry bombs dead center of the car. It is nice and loud when you get on it. I was planning on straight pipes but I drove it with open headers and changed my mind.
Hello I have had mine on my 50 Chevy Pickup for three years. Never a problem with the Boys in Blue up here in Ontario Canada. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a373/4hawkrod/CopyofDCFN0002.jpg
I had straights on the 57 wagon but it was a little raspy for me...so I added a couple of shorty gl***packs on backwards and the pipes mellowed out just enough to really sound right.
dunno but straight pipes from headers out of a 454 will trigger every car alarm within 3 blocks... that's all the info I got on that subject.
It Will Really Be Loud. Had A 235 With Cherry Bombs On It. Fenton Headers.would Really Rattle The Windows. Deucemanab
I ran fenton headers into lakes pipes on the 1956 235 I had in my 51 chevy. Straight it was very loud. I was fun for a while .. but it took its toll on my hearing. I put in some baffles.. then a few stainless steel chore boy scrubbing pads. It mellowed out nicely. below 2000 rpm like a kitten. rev it up to 3000.. still nice and loud.
Long , long ago, in a land far away, I was once a foolish young man. Now I am a foolish old man. But I remember my straight pipes on my '51 w/ powerglide, 235. My logic, at the time, (if a 16 yr.old has any logical thoughts ) told me that big was better. Well yeah, it was plenty loud. But sounded like ****. My buddy, who wasn't a whole lot smarter than me, suggested going to a smaller pipe. THIS gave it some tone and character. Didn't rap bad unless you really got on it...Ole Pork
