I'm running a three carb setup on a SBC using Holley 94's. I know my fuel pressure needs to be 2-3 psi, but what kind of volume do I need? I've seen a pump that pumps 28 gph at that psi, is that enough?
I would think so.... There is no way your motor could consume 28 gph? Think about it. I'm no carb guru, just seems to make sense?
I agree but these fuel pumps are designed for a four banger with a single carb. Seems like there won't be enough volume for a three carb setup on a V8? I don't know much about this stuff either, but I know that you will need more volume under harder acceleration, just wondering if that will be enough??
Let's say your SBC makes 300 hp and a pretty typical "brake specific" for this engine is probably .5 lb of fuel/horse power hour. So at WOT your SBC is useing about 150 lbs of gas per hour. Gas weights about 6 lbs/gallons of 150 lbs/hour = about 25 gallons/hour so at 28 gph you should be good. Rex
can your car use more then 28 gallons of fuel in an hour??? how many gallons per hour does the pump flow at that psi. most gph is mesured at free flow. if your car got 5 mpg with 28 gallons you would drive 140 miles = 140 mph to use that much fuel in an hour. yes pum should be fine
I am guessing your running 3, 2b carbs? A holley blue pump will handle that with out a problem. I use it with my 3 450s(3/8s fuel line) and i never had any problems.
The detail that you may want to consider is how the pump is rated. That 28 gph is probably with no restrictions such as gas lines and carb valves. The actual flow will probably much less than the rated 28gph. Just a thought.
Rex is pretty right on. The idea is that the carbs get the fuel they need to feed the engine at FULL THROTTLE. 28 gph sounds like a lot because you don't spent hour after hour at full throttle but what you do need to do is feed that engine enough fuel for the time spent at full throttle so that you dont suck the float bowls dry. Personally I like to run a good electric or mechanical that puts out 7-14 psi and regulate it down to what you need, with a good fuel regulator, then you are sure that you can feed what ever the engine needs. Good luck
